I cannot say enough about how impressed I am with ANNETTE, manager of the Madison County Animal Shelter.I had not visited the shelter in several years and when I did visit last week, I was SO impressed at the neat, clean spic-and-span condition of everything I saw - Annette's office, the outside runs and the entire area.I wanted to meet Annette, who had been so very kind to work patiently with my daughter who is looking to adopt a dog. Five weeks ago, my daughter had to say a very sad goodbye to her beloved i5-year old Willow who had been with them since she was a 3 week old puppy. My daughter found a young dog she loved at our shelter and was #1 in line for her, but realized she wasn't quite ready to adopt. She was thrilled, though, to learn her own request facilitated the dog actually returning to her original home - both dog and Mom couldn't be happier and my daughter feels so good about that.My daughter will be watching the Shelter's Facebook page and plans to return soon to find another forever friend because she knows how well taken care of the animals are here. She was so comforted by Annette's understanding manner and her sweet personality, and we are both impressed with her deep knowledge of dog behavior. Even more important is Annette's obvious loving concern to place each animal in a happy forever home.Annette is CLEARLY the right person for the job! And Madison County is very, very lucky to have her keeping our shelter in such wonderful condition and the animals in a safe comfortable environment. Every lost animal who comes into Annette's care will leave a happier pet.This is just ONE of the reasons we are so happy we moved to Madison 32 years ago from Northern Va. and we are here to stay!!With gratitude - Annie and Mack Rowe, Madison, Va.

We adopted Honey today! You can clearly tell this dog was unconditionally loved while in the shelter! I actually think she misses her people there! She is settled in so nicely and a sweetheart! I highly recommend this shelter. They love the animals there like their own.

We adopted our furbaby in 2015 and we go by there periodically to see if there is another furbaby that would fit into our family. Each time we've gone the same lady is super friendly and always has a 4 legged companion in the lobby. I've never had the feeling of abuse or neglect when visiting with the dogs or the cats. All animals have different personalities, however with that being said, you cannot assume "abuse" just because you hear someone else say it. You need to visit and see for yourself the love and care that's shown there!

Can't understand why people are so critical. 😕 I've visited and found the shelter to be super clean and the person working that day was not only cleaning and caring for all the animals but was working with all of them for socialization. There was one dog who greeted me from the kennel and she showed no signs of distress or mistreatment. Upon entering I was greeted by the unofficial shelter mascot, a very calm and extremely happy pittie who wanted to give me her toy without any expectation. None of the dogs I met were mistreated or abused, so the one star folks below are misrepresenting the truth of this shelter. The person on duty when I visited has been working there for many years and is passionate about caring for all the animals and it shows in the wagging tails and calm, friendly nature of the animals in residence. Those of us who have empathic relationships with 4 leggeds know the most subtle signs of mistreatment and I can state emphatically that this shelter cares deeply for all who enter looking for a new home and furever family.
