PLEASE DO NOT RENT FROM THIS COMPANY. Like all the other reviews they make dishonest charges. We got the car, almost empty, so we figured we would return the car in the same state. We do have a picture to prove that to them. Then they also charged us cleaning because there was a small amount of sand in the car. In the very fine, print it says the car has to be in good condition for the next customer so in other wards they don’t clean the cars you are supposed to otherwise you will get charged $450! Not $50 not $100- $450 for a little sand that could have been vacuumed in 5 minutes. That is so horrible and dishonest! It looks like the majority of people have had terrible experiences with this company. If everyone would just rent from other people, hopefully this company would either change their customer service or maybe go out of business if they don’t like working with people to make good experiences.

Wish I would of checked google reviews before renting from this company. I just figured since it was the same company as Avis/Budget, that it was a legitimate company. But sadly I ended up paying about 30% more then quoted by expedia because of the same shady charges that other people have mentioned. I will just have to steer clear of all the Avis/Budget family of car rentals.

I canceled it. Went to the airport Payless(Avis) and was told the credit card must match the drivers license. Now, I called ahead of time and told them that my boss was paying for it. I specifically asked them if the card and driver license didn't match if it was allowed. They assured me it was. I arrived and was turned down due to this issue. I called Payless and asked them to intervene. They declined and said it was up to them. I was stranded. So, I canceled the reservation. Lady at the counter was completely unhelpful and uncaring.

Absolutely horrible. Reserved weeks in advanced. Closes at 10p so we had to return via Lyft to get car only to be told they would not take our credit care & refused cash payment. Unbelievable. No customer service. Avoid at all cost.

Oh boy, looks like we had the same experience as most here have. We rented out of Denver and prepaid to save however we were charged for toll fees when we didn't want them. Rented a F-150 and they gave us a jeep that was filthy inside. no customer service when we dropped off, they just said to leave the keys in the vehicle, no inspection. I guess this is so they can charge what they want to. There was a man in the office, been there 2.5 hours fighting charges that were added to his bill. I will pay more and forget payless.

Good fleet of vehicles. Very helpful staff, I believe they are somehow affiliated with Avis and share space with them. Great prices, higher than Fox, lower than Enterprise. Our vehicle had less than 10k miles and was clean and had great safety options

Can I do negative stars?? Waited longer in line than my actual flight. Then notified no cars available and come back in a few hours. Why do they take reservations for specific times if they don’t have cars. Severely understaffed and it was the middle of the day. Tons of open check in terminals and a skeleton crew running it. What a joke. Do not use them! I know that was my last time.

Absolutely awful customer service. Gave me a car that smelled like smoke and charged ME $250 for the damage. I don’t even smoke!! The customer in front of me actually rejected the car because of it and I needed to get to work so I took it. If I could give them 0 stars I would! 0/5 stars would not recommend. Maybe screen the cars for damage before passing it along to the next customer? NO help at all from the customer service number either and it’s actually so INFURIATING

Worst service ever, they are unethical liars. Dropped off the car completely fueled, they charged me an additional $70 dollars for gas. They guy that received the car didn’t tell me about it, and I realized the charge was there after I arrived to my destination. Called to have them fix the extra charge, never got refunded. Do not trust them, look at your email receipt before you leave. Never again!

I waited an hour and a half, then walked down to her into the suv I waited for, for it to be taken by another customer. So then I had to go back in and get a different car. I booked on Priceline and i was told at the counter about a 215 deposit, refundable upon returning the vehicle. I have yet to get that back, I contacted people at Priceline and they said to contact the location but no body will answer the phones.

I’ve been putting off writing this review for the past 2 months, mostly because it took me a long time to accurately put into words how insanely terrible this company is.Taking a page from another “Payless” company, Payless Shoe Stores, Payless car company seems to be asking the age old question: “You could pay more, but why?”Well, not having your bucket list trip to Yellowstone ruined by a callous, thoughtless company with a call center full incompetent employees that either don’t care to try to help your customers, or go out of their way not to help customers because they take some kind of sadistic pleasure in doing may be a good reason to shell out a few extra bucks for a car rental.The following are a list of modes of transportation I would trust before I trust Payless Car Rental again:1) A saddled, yet untrained rabid Jaguar2) A guy sporting a mullet driving a rusted out 1972 Ford Pinto with used needles littering the backseat3) Bill Cosby’s Cars with Cocktails Taxi Services4) Wile E. Coyote’s Rocket Skates by ACME5) An Alaskan Dog Sled in the middle of the oceanWhen I say that my experience with Payless Car Rental straight up ruined my trip, I don’t simply mean, “Hey, that was a bad experience and I had to pay a few dollars extra, and that was an inconvenience.” I mean that while I was supposed to be enjoying my hard-earned time and money enjoying my life, I instead spent several hours being bounced from employee to employee on the call center line, with not a single person able or willing to help me. In fact, I’m almost impressed with your company’s ineptitude. Whoever your fine “supervisor” was on the evening Tuesday, June 13th was, I’d honestly like to commend him. Were he to work for any other company, he’d not be allowed to supervise drying paint, and yet here, at the Payless Customer Service Call Center, he was actually put in charge of other employees despite being one of the rudest men I’ve ever had the displeasure of speaking to. My hats off to him for finding a company that rewards failure with promotion. Now that I mention it, I am wondering: are you guys hiring? Since Dick’s Last Resort won’t hire me to be a rude and condescending jerkface, I know that I could make a sound career of doing so with Payless Car Rental.At the counter at the Salt Lake City airport, we were told that we could extend the rental if needed, all we had to do was call. No problem, right? Spoiler alert: It was in fact, a huge problem. When we called to extend the rental, we couldn’t reach the people at the airport and were instead pushed to the call center. With no contact information to reach the airport, We were bounced around, put on hold, and told that the car had to be returned. When I got on the phone with the supervisor, I apparently broke his NPC programming because the only thing we would say over and over again was “Yes, you must return the car, sir. Yes, you must return the car, sir. Yes, you must return the car, sir.” We left Yellowstone, lost the money on the room that we had already paid for that night, and drove the five and a half hours back to the Salt Lake City airport, finally arriving exhausted at 1:30 in the morning, the employee at the Avis counter was kind and understanding and told us that all we had to do was keep the car. Which was nice, but also kind of a slap in the face since the robotic supervisor from the call center told me the opposite of this. We then had to go get a last-minute hotel in Salt Lake City and pay for an Uber to get there.Payless Car Rental cost me a lot of money and ruined my trip, without so much as an apology. I’m going to make it my personal mission to spread the word on whatever platforms I can and tell everyone I know to stay away from your company. It’s honestly no wonder that there is a class action lawsuit pending against you.I sincerely hope that you all go out of business.

Never again. Payless / Avis at SLC are the worst. Booked a standard SUV a few hours before pickup because it was snowing. I had my wife and a 1 year old with me. On arrival, there were no options other than minivan at pickup. I made it to my destination somehow which was extremely stressful given the wife and kids. It snowed more overnight and the minivan was useless in those conditions. They could not provide an alternative and would not tow the car without charging me even though the I explained the minivan would not be suitable. I ended up getting it towed myself back to SLC. And after 1 and half days of my vacation on the phone being passed from Avis customer service to Payless who didn't recognize my booking. they finally gave me a refund (still being processed.... ) but what about all that lost time because they can't run a car rental business. I understand how fleet business works but these guys take the biscuit.Even though I was refunded - I was down the tow charge and the 1.5 days of vacation.Bad counter service - provide no additional options and tries to pretend it is an upgrade.Useless customer service - Payless and Avis don't recognize booking depending who you call. Pass you around until your will to live ebbs away.People rely on these services and use vehicles to ensure their families are safe - if you book 4 hours before pickup - I would expect the class of car to be available. If you can't manage that business. They don't deserve the rental car license

Terrible. Guy at counter had no idea how to do his job and he struggled for an hour on the car pick-up process which should, in competent hands, take a matter of minutes. We returned the car in perfect condition with a full tank of gas. The receipt came, and somehow our $130 reservation turned into a $300 charge. We were wrongly charged for returning the car without a full tank (which is untrue) on top of a mountain of unspecified other fees. This place should be shut down - what they do is outright criminal. Avoid at all costs.

DO NOT RENT A CAR FROM THEM!!! They are a SCAM and hassle beyond belief. Cars were filthy and not maintained. Added almost 250 extra hidden fees. Car was smoked in and filthy with pet hair. Staff was rude both at counter and lot. The people at the counter were talking about there stupid drama while a line waited. Staff we NOT helpful, NOT professional and one was clearly crack out of his mind. If you need a rental this place is awful. Its easier to use the others NOT AVIS NOR PAYLESS they are both the same.

Car that I reserved was not available so they gave me an "upgrade" to a minivan. I was told there would be no extra charge for it. Returned the car with no issues and all of a sudden my $295 reservation turned into a $600+ reservation. I admit I had one extra day (on a 7 day rental) but when I asked about the details for the charges all I was told was "our records show that you accepted the loss damage waiver" when I never confirmed that either online or in person. I asked for a receipt or proof of this and was never sent anything. Very upsetting, avoid this company at all costs. Trying to save money will cost you more with Payless.

DO NOT RENT here (Wrongly billed)They will secretly charge you with fees/services that you did not request, if you dont follow up they will eat you alive.I did NOT request insurance coverage because i have my amex card which already includes it (when i check in at the counter i explained this to the lady and she confirms that I have declined this). After checking out, it comes to my surprise that they have charged me for insurance even though I DECLINED it. I tell this to the phone rep customer service and she mentions that it is not the billing departments fault and the best they can do is give me a 50% discount on the insurance (EVEN THOUGH I DECLINED IT). I ALSO I returned the car with FULL GAS and they still charged me as if I hadn't returned it with gas (I have picture and full receipt). I asked to speak on the phone with a supervisor and after a 20minute hold got hang up. Wasted more than one hour on the phone with them for nothing. Do not waste your time and money with this rental company.

ZERO STARS. This has been the worst experience with a rental I have ever had. We rented a car for 3 days in July 2020. We received a bill for a cracked windshield 2 months later (annoying, but that is life). In December, 5 MONTHS LATER, we received another bill for $388 citing undercarriage damage, towing fee, and processing expenses. 1) 12/4/2020 - I called CS to get an explanation. I was told it was in error and I WOULD NOT BE CHARGED. I was charged the $388 on my card on 12/15/2020. 2) 12/19/2020 - I called again asking for an explanation. I was told there was no record of my prior conversation indicating I would not be charged. They started a case and told I would receive a call back within 48 hours. 3) 12/22/2020 - No call received, I called in and was told a manager would call back within 5 business days. 4) 1/7/2021 - 2 weeks later, I called in after not receiving a call. I was told I would get a call within 3-5 business days. THIS IS A JOKE. I have been lied to by customer service reps, I have received no evidence of the undercarriage damage (we also didn't have it towed), and they billed me 5 MONTHS after the rental date. I will never rent here again and continue to share my Payless experience.

We Just finished renting a car at the SLC airport for a week for What was quoted and we signed For of $363. I just looked at my bank stmt and we were charged $532! Finding a contact number took some time and now I have to wait for an invoice to be emailed to see what the extra $ are for. I’m suspecting that they charged for fuel fill up which we said we would take care of ourselves and in fact returned the car with a full tank. I am not happy and I am not going to let it go. Sure wish I had read all the bad reviews, but At least the car was clean.We were refunded the extra $170 for a fuel fill up (which I said we would return the car full and they could not have gotten a drop in the tank, if they had tried!). But I should not have had to call several phone numbers, dug up receipts for all the gas we put in the car, scan and send emails in order to right the wrong. Never have had this issue with renting a car before. Beware and get gas receipts if you use this company.

DO NOT RENT FROM HERE! RUN! I prepaid for my rental car, picked it up, which was all a hassle because they do not have a good way to connect with 3rd party sites, which is what i used to book. This whole process took forever. Also, the first car I got was really dirty.Then as I went to return the car I made sure with the desk agent that I would not be charged again. I asked her twice and she said no i would not. I look at my credit card statement next day and see a huge charge! Now I have been battling customer service on the phone for over a month for a refund! It has been a complete hassle to get someone over the phone with the long wait time. Also, i have had 2 representatives just hang up the phone on me out of nowhere, and i have had to keep calling. I am still waiting on my refund for over a month. Never again! Please go somewhere else!

With all the bad reviews, I was nervous but took a chance for the great price. We rented a full size car for a week. We stood in line to pick up for about 20 minutes. Not bad. Our car wasn't super clean but was acceptable. No real issues with it. Drop off was super easy and only took 5 minutes. We filled up before returning and were only charged what our original reservation was for. Overall a good experience.

UPDATE to original review below: Received email from company removing the fuel charge after I sent a PDF of the gas receipt. A real pain to do, but worth it to recover nearly $100. Other than the extra legwork created by a default that favors the company, the vehicle was nice.Nice vehicle, but shady business practice. Charged me for fuel and associated charges even though I returned it with a full tank. Called customer service immediately upon reviewing the e-receipt. Was given a reference number and told I’d be contacted in 3-5 business days. I have a dated fuel receipt and will fight this to the end. These guys are affiliated with Avis.

I got a flat tire, customer service couldn't even tell me if it was covered in my rental agreement and then hung up. I handle it myself. Never again with this company. Payless and Budget are owned by Avis, won't be using them as well.

SLC Payless billed me for Optional Services that I did not asked for. I specifically told agent that I did not want any additional services and fees. I even prepaid online. Second, I filled the tank FULL prior to dropping it off. They stated in my receipt (via email) that the tank was not 100% full. I was still a gallon short? The gas pump automatically stopped at full! Seems like other reviewers have the same problem. I contacted customer service and they were able to adjust the price. Still, I am paying for something that I did not want in the first place!PLEASE DO NOT RENT FROM THESE PEOPLE. Pay a little more for better customer service.

Like a lot of other people, I didn't have a good experience with Payless Rental. The reservation process through Priceline and getting the car was easy. The car was not super clean but it was ok. When I made the reservation I had selected that I did not want insurance but they added it anyway. I went back to talk to the person at the desk on the same day I rented the car and he said that he couldn't waive the insurance but gave me a number for customer service. I talked to the customer service person and she told me that she couldn't help me and that I needed to talk to someone at the desk. I talked to the person at the desk again he said that I needed to call customer service. No one can help you.

Trust the reviews!! Payless charged me for fuel even though I filled it up completely. I am unable to reach them and dispute the charges. I would like to see a receipt of how much they added in gas because that is basically impossible. I received the car with 364 miles to go and when I dropped it off it was 372. And they charged me $20. In addition, I received a car that was filthy dirty with stains and hair all over it and definitely not COVID cleaned. I complained and then received a car that was clean but I am still stuck with an extra charge. Never again - doesn't matter how much cheaper they are.

Rented a car for two days for a business trip. Returned the vehicle without any hiccups. Over a month later, a charge of more than $500 hits my credit card without any notice or documentation. After sitting on hold a representative finally tells me that there was glass damage? No glass damage occurred while I had the vehicle. The "documentation" I had to REQUEST provided no pictures or any proof. So I guess it's my word versus theirs. This is an absolutely RIDICULOUS way to handle this situation. No wonder their reviews are so awful. I will gladly take my business elsewhere.

No words to describe the experience with this company, if there's a way to give them - 0 stars I would. Horrible customer service. I reserved a car in for my trip to Puerto Rico, the reservation was for $107, at the counter they wanted to charge me $450, they wanted me to purchase their car insurance. I showed them proof that my personal insurance, plus my credit card company will pay for any damage , they told me that it was impossible since my cars that are insured are a 2001 cherokee and a 2015 Ford 150, ...I had to call my insurance so they can provide me with extra information to show these people that I have full coverage, and in the process I was interested by the front desk girl, last name Centeno, she told me that now regardless of the new information I was going to provide, she was denying my reservation because I refused to purchase the insurance with them...WHATTT ! I ended going back to the airport and getting a car with Alamo car rental, I ended up paying a little bit more, but the experience there was an excelente one, they accepted my insurance papers and no issues with them. The lack of professionalism with Payless care rental is indescribable , they should not run a business like this. Be aware, pay the extra fee and go directly to the airport and rent a car there.

Easy to rent and car in good condition. The line was a bit long to check in, but nothing crazy compared to every other company. The staff were nice and helpful. We used a 3rd party site to get a good deal on our rental car. Overall would recommend and will use again!
