I went on a Thursday afternoon. I had heard that they have quality meat. The meat case was very poorly stocked, and the meat in the case was of poor quality. Many packages were brown and discolored. The banana selection was also very poor also. They do have a wide selection as a grocery store. The store is definitely dated, which is not bad. They need to look at the quality of fresh items and the dates.

Bought recently and best thing that has happened to this place. It's small but my wife now goes here first because the new owner has really improved the product, fresh vegetables especially. Only place in town we walk out after spending $100 and have multiple bags and feels like you most got your monies worth. Meat dept has always been one of the best also. Keep improving, so far so good!

This place advertises every item at cost plus 10%. Here's thing. That's totally not true. $5.64 for a gallon of milk. I can go to walmart and spend $3.29. Bread is 2.49. Most of their prices are double what other stores are.

I went in to buy the large roll of hamburger meat twice because the only other place you can buy the large rolls is Walmart both times it was out of date by a day or two I ask the owner if he would mark it down and was told no, the owners before would mark it down if they weren't the only other place you could buy the large rolls I wouldn't go in anymore

Local grocery store with country feel. Feels homey, quaint, everything you need grocery wise. Great wine and beer selection. Tons of deals on local produce and meats. Great drink selection by the registers. Pretty large frozen section for a small place. Good hours, old-school vending machines out front. Central location, large parking lot, it's always busy so be ready for that. Otherwise exactly what I'm looking for in a local grocer, thanks guys!

Have shopped at Bates for years and the new owners are doing an amazing job at renewing and organizing the store ! Large selection of products that you wont find at your regular grocery store !!! For my Mexican food lovers they sell fresh handmade tortillas so skip your regular store factory made tortillas and buy their fresh handmade tortillas instead !! Their produce is always fresh and delightful.Excellent meat department with great prices. They have a lot of diverse food selections for those who are looking for ethnic food and ethnic ingredients.The employees are always so helpful and bonus points some are bilingual I think that’s very serviceable ! Overall Bates is a great local grocery store !!

Love the store and the prices but we weren't too happy this last time sadly. We go every Friday to visit family and stock up on some of their great meats. The sign said Ground Beef $1.78 lb. But we were shocked when the price was just as high as it is here in Huntsville/Hazel Green Al. Area. Please check your sign more often. Ground beef down this way is $4.00 a lb. Almost. I was there to buy not only for my husband and I but my kids and father as well. Other than that the store is great!

Great home town store. A block from Square in Winchester. Has about anything you want. Daughter found something, she could not find any where else. Bought all they had. Very convenient to were we are staying.

I like to buy my meats from here. I consider them to have a great butcher. The cuts always look great & have just the right amount of fat or marbling. They have reasonable prices...remembering to figure in the 10%. They will surprise you with the different little things you may find there that you wouldn't expect to at a grocery store. They also have a deli ... and they do cook certain items. I've not used this service yet so I can comment on it other than I have been there & seen them very busy back there.

We enjoyed this grocery. Not the big corporate place but still a nice selection. Sells homemade pizza there also. Freshly made while you shop. Friendly staff.

You'll find stuff here that isn't in Walmart or Kroger, which is a refreshing change sometimes if you like to try new things and other rarely seen brands. If you like discovering new things to try, this store has some of those items.

It's a old grocery store that been here as long as I can remember. It prices are not that bad and you can get meat at a lower price compared to other grocery and they carry different items that others don't, one main reason I didn't give 5 star because I have bought stuff there and it would be expired so always check your dates

They charge retail prices on all goods, then add another 10% plus taxes. Good for a quick grab, but definitely wouldn't recommend for week to week shopping. CHECK ALL DATES ON EVERY PRODUCT YOU BUY!!

Fair prices, excellent meat department they will custom cut meat apon request. wheelchair accessible but parking lot could be very dangerous to someone in a wheelchair. Lots of cracks and uneven surfaces. Non handicapped people park in handicapped parking spots.

Old-fashioned mom and pop grocery store. Smaller scale than a newer supermarket. Produce not as fresh but you can find some good bargains. They have excellent sugar cured hams for baking.

Everything is always expired. I try to only buy nonperishable items there. I got a cheese cake once that had been expired for almost a year and the little Debbie's I buy I always have to check because they are usually a couple months after the date. There are new staff members coming in and out, so don't expect to find expierienced people around to help you.

You can get some good deals there. Watch out for soon to go out of date itemsI bought some little angel food cakes to pit strawberries on for a weekend treat. Three days later the cakes were moldy.

You have to watch the pricing of what you are buying. The items that you put in your buggy will have one price on it, but when you go to check out there is a 10% mark up on everything. They tell you that you are buying the item for cost plus 10%. Just for your information.
