I volunteered here for work and absolutely love the facility! The kennels are very well maintained and cleaned, there’s a gift shop, a kitten area, AND it doesn’t smell like a shelter like other places do! You can definitely tell the dogs are handled well too and they make sure to handle each one as a part of the family, not as “just a dog”.The dogs are walked by volunteers and I was so sad I was unable to take Machiatto (pictures) home (renting here is a pain to have a dog(s) unfortunately) because he is SUCH a sweet boy and deserves the best I’ve volunteered at many humane societies in my time and rescues and by far KCHS has the best facility I’ve seen!

Please keep a lookout for this dog, Sadie. She was stolen from a hiker on the Appalachian Trail. He may be using her to attract women and then when he finishes his hike in Georgia at Springer Mtn near SC, he may ditch her. She is a 13 yo female, is chipped

I have adopted a kitten from this shelter, I love him by the way. However, neutering my baby was a part of the adoption fee, however the service was never rendered. I called multiple times to try to schedule an appointment, however no return calls were made. I ended up taking him to the SPCA on Greenlawn and paying for this service. Now my daughter adopted a female kitten and the same thing is happening to her. The female kitten is now in heat and of course and appointment can't be scheduled through the SPCA until May. My biggest frustration is, if we are trying to help the pet population by adopting our fur babies from a shelter so they have a home, the adoption fee covers their surgeries, why isn't the service provided? And so, the vicious cycle of unwanted fur babies continues because, let's face it, some people cannot afford to take off work and pay for the service that has already been paid for. Very aggravating.

In October 2021 I was driving to Chicago for a wedding. We stopped at a rest area 10 minutes from this shelter. Someone had dumped kittens! I contacted the shelter. They told me they were aware of the situation and would be trapping them. I felt ok to continue on my way because these kittens would be taken care of. I called the shelter 5 days later, they were still trying to trap. I called after another 5 days, they said they were unable to trap and had given up! When I got home from my trip, I turned around and drove. 2-1/2 hours back to this rest area. The first kitten literally walked right up to me! I picked him up and put him in a carrier. That was super hard! His brother took 1 hour and 20 minutes to finally go in the live trap. When I took them to the shelter I was told they would TNR them back to the rest area! Literally in the middle of a highway! WTH is wrong with this shelter!? I tok them home and they were both kneading and purring immediately! The lack of effort and I’m assuming lies on the part of this shelter is disappointing. Had they told the truth I would have tried to get them on my way to Chicago where the shelters are much less crowded than the n the south.

They say they are a no kill shelter yet they killed 4 of my dogs 2 of which was 6 months old and there pregnant mom. These dogs were the sweetest dogs very human friendly. Just not livestock friendly which is not a reason to kill them and say they are aggressive. I was told to surrender them to give them a chance to be adopted yet they murdered them 24 hours later. I am so heartbroken and would of moved with them instead of having them murdered but I was not given that chance. These people lie to you and kill animals that truly don't deserve it.

This organization is just outstanding, with a staff and volunteers that really care about abandoned dogs and cats. I went to adopt a cat and was able to select one that I truly wanted. The cat was spayed, microchipped, given the rabies shot, applied with flee protection and given the FIV test. She's at her forever home now. I can't see how there could be any improvements needed - just an outstanding organization!

Would not answer the phone. Have called multiple times about adopting a dog that we fell in love with. We live over 2 hours away and cannot get anyone to answer the phones, we have left multiple messages, Facebook messages, and emails and nothing… it’s sad we were ready to bring home this girl but seems they don’t care.

The things that the public don’t know about this place…. This should really be ran by the town or animal control and NOT a bunch of old women.

They really love what they do and it shows from the moment you walk in. The animals are well taken care and they are given so much love. Kershaw works on their behavior/socialism as soon as they arrive. I looked at numerous facilities and shelters before finding our GiGi, and by far, they are the most professional, caring and clean shelter that you will find. There are so many great animals to choose from, so go check them out and get your new member of the family. There is one there that's waiting just for you because they need exactly what you have to offer...unconditional love!!!

Very nice. Clean help full and the staff want to help any way possible. If your looking for a pet either cat dog puppy or couch pillow they probably have you covered. They do a great job at trying to find a fur ever home for all of them.

yesterday i had to surrender my dog to this shelter, reading these reviews make me a little bit worried because your guys jobs are to take care of animals and make sure they have a better life. especially with these reviews saying the ceo had 40 dead animals in her house. i don’t play about animals and i definitely don’t play about my dog. make sure y’all are handling them with care! And how long does it take to upload animals because i still have yet to see mine?

3.28.23 doll has got loose from her harness and found a way out in the far end of the back yard twice in 2 days. I'm keeping her inside. She just lays around. On 4.20.23 I went there to retrieve an abandoned, ignored dog I left there, because her owner asked me to find her a home. His wife left, and he could not take care of her. After researching and calling Several Shelters, I contacted Kershaw County Humane Society because I heard great things about them. I called on the 27th of March and talked to Mr. Jackson, he asked that I email him pictures of her and her living conditions. He emailed me 3 hrs later, stating that he had SOMEONE interested in her, so I took her to the shelter on March 31 per his request. This was just 4 days after she tested negative after her heartworm treatments.I had been caring for her since October 2022 (per the owners request, and Ana was my friend) they both worked long hours and asked for my help. In October, the wife asked me to help her get them spayed and vetted, so for the next few months, I took them and picked them up until they were medically fit except that Doll was heartworm positive. Soon after they were spayed, the wife, Ana, left due to marital problems. I continued to feed and care for Doll. The husband paid for her heartworm treatments, medicine, and food, and I took care of her from November til March 31st. I took her for all her treatments, and I went over there twice daily to feed and water her and spend some time with her. She is a Great Dog!!!I have 3 small Furbabies, and Doll is a Shar Pei Mix at 52 pounds, so I tried to find her a good home and trusted Mr. Jackson. I did send an email to check on her a week later, and Mr. Jackson responded, "Doll is fine, and I have a Rescue interested in her." I emailed 1 more time just to say I would like to visit if she was there longer than 3 weeks, no reply. On April 17th, a very intuitive, caring staff member called me and told me Doll was not doing well, and I needed to come get her. I asked her about the family and rescue Mr. Jackson told me about, and she said it was not true, there was no one interested in Doll, and she needed to get out of the kennel so I started preparing my yard so I could foster her until a rescue could be found. This employee did the right thing calling me because when I saw Doll, she was so very happy to see me. She had lost weight, and the light in her eyes was gone.I wanted to report this, so I called the Columbia Humane Society, I live in Columbia, and they suggested I call Animal Rescue in Camden and report this issue. I did. The lady I spoke to was very nice and said she would look into it. I then received a call from the person over Mr. Jackson and she got involved. I emailed all pictures and correspondence between myself and Mr. Jackson to her, and I told her I would come get Doll to foster until a good home could be found. I have contacted more rescues but still have Doll, and she is doing ok. She is eating, playing, and getting along with my dogs. She has never, in her 3 years, been able to run free. I love her so much but do need to find her a good home. I am 68 on a fixed income and have several health problems which makes it hard on me to handle a big strong dog, Barbara Groves.

A Huge thank you to Jaime for meeting me today to help out a kitten in need that showed up in our yard last night. Jaime was ready and waiting when I arrived at the shelter. She had a kennel ready to ensure he was comfortable and able to settle in. We are lucky to have such a valuable resource in our community with staff that is dedicated to the safety and well being of the animals in need. Thank you for your dedication and hard work.
