I've purchased the occasional seed packet or seedling at Fang! over the past couple of years; friendly staff for sure! But I adopted a puppy yesterday and took him on his first walk from our house to Fang! and was SO VERY PLEASED with the entire experience! From all the welcoming cuddles for 'Belly' and the expert customer service Tom R. gave us! There's a lot of new stuff on the market that I didn't even know about, but Tom was knowledgeable, friendly, and walked us through the store and helped me select what I needed. Belly found his favorite dog treat so I guess we'll be taking regular walks to Fang! Well done to the owners and the staff for creating the kind of vibe that the big box stores can't ever provide!

Great selection of quality cat and dog food as well as all kinds of pet supplies. The garden and plant selections are quite good too - houseplants are well priced.I love that this is a small, local store.A few months back I walked over and bought several bags of soil, unplanned, and just thought I'd take two trips to get them home - but an employee offered me the use of a cart which was a lovely and appreciated gesture. Can't see that happening at a petco!

The Staff at Fang have been so helpful especially during the pandemic. It is so hard to work retail and often a dehumanizing experience from customers and owners alike. I have deeply appreciated even still that the team members at fang are always available to answers questions about my yard and little cat. If the owners don't recognize their union however I will not be returning.

Brought in our new puppy for some supplies and puppy was overwhelmed and pooped on the floor. The Fang staff were incredibly accommodating and friendly giving us a bag to clean up his potty accident and treats to help puppy feel more at ease in the store. Fang had all the supplies we needed and it was a great experience getting our new pup some exposure to new dogs/humans from a distance. Super cute French fry toy featured in photo!

I'm so excited that Fang! is now a union represented pet store. The only one in the entire U.S.! Support labor and shop at Fang! Plus, staff is truly exception, and a great selection, much of it locally sourced.

One star for the friendly service and the variety they carry on the garden supply side.Zero star for the pet store. Take your receipt and compare what they charge you vs what the sticker price says. Twice in a row, I was charged more (even with 10% at happy hour) than the sticker price. The first time, it was just one item back in mid December. The second time (a month later) I got one thing from the garden side of the store and two dog treats and both dog treats got charged the wrong and inflated price. Dental sticks had a price tag of 99 cents per and they rang up 1.15 per. Cod skin says $31.99/lb and rang up $37.99/lb. When I asked the staff and store manager about it, they apologized and said they could refund me but it's due to them adjusting prices in the system but not in the store in a timely fashion.I loved Fang since we moved to the neighborhood but I will not return to a store that's dishonest. So disappointed.

2023 Update: Still the best trees. I don't bother looking anywhere else.North Portland Christmas Trees behind the shop building has the best looking trees around. They only have noble firs, but that's the kind of tree you want anyway. Service was phenomenal. Definitely the place to get a tree!

Just the best neighborhood pet supply shop. Everyone who works there is great.

We love this place! They have great selection, very friendly knowledgeable staff, and offer a frequent buyer rewards program that is better than any occasional discount or coupon from a big box store! We love that they carry such a great selection of local brands of raw food for our two cats and pup. Our pup loves shopping here with us and is always greeted by the kindest staff!I’m prompted to review this excellent local store because there has been recent staff turnover, and I have noticed that the check out area could really use some improvements to be more ergonomic and protect the staff from preventable injuries. The computer monitor needs to be raised up to eye level, especially because it is such a labor intensive process for staff to verify and enter the rewards. This store is a gem, primarily because of it’s customer service and the staff members are a precious resource worth investing in. Thank you!

I love having this shop in the neighborhood! We get all of our dog and cat food here, plus plenty of treats, collars, toys, etc. I don't think I've ever had a bad experience with pet shop staff; they are always welcoming, helpful, and knowledgeable. Sadly, I have noticed some turnover lately. I hear that there are unionizing efforts underway, so I hope the owner supports those changes to keep excellent staff in the store. On the green side, there are lots of fun plants and pots in the indoor section. I'm always tempted by them (and often succomb) even though I'm usually at the store for other reasons. I love that the outdoor garden section carries native plants! I sometimes see non-native plants mixed in with the natives but hopefully someone with expertise in that area with join the staff. I've also purchased ornamental and culinary plants that I've been happy with.

Wonderful shop! Stopped in immediately after moving to town and staff members were so helpful and friendly! They gave my pup extra treats and even a little 'welcome to Kenton' treat to us. We will definitely be back to indulge in some plant purchases!

I love this shop! I love taking my dog just to wonder around and check things out. They’re fairly expensive and they have a limited supply of things like harnesses and actual dog supplies. They have a lot of like treats and medication stuff and dog food. I love walking around their garden section, they sell really pretty rocks and moss so that you can use to layer your soil in a way that’s pleasing to the eye. They have a great supply of and a beautiful display for their air plants. This is definitely the spot to go if that’s your area of interest. The service is wonderful, they are very pleasant, though not always knowledgeable about the plants. I feel like if you advertise your store as a plant store, the cashier or someone working there should be able to give you some information about the plants without just googling it. I can Google information about the plants myself. They also have separate hours for their outdoor gardening area, and I’ve been there several times and for some reason it’s never open when I’m there… Like it closes an hour before they close, which is kind of strange. I don’t know why that area would need to be closed off or not be open on a regular basis.

I love Fang! Now that we have a new dog, I’m back to shopping for pet supplies but you can always find a great assortment of indoor and outdoor plants and indoor planter pots even if you don’t have an animal companion at home. Great shop with great staff!!

I love Fang and Salty’s Pet Supply. It’s the only place I’ll buy my dogs food. Tim is incredibly helpful and very knowledgeable. I am always thankful for his expertise. And don’t miss pet photos with Santa in the winter! Such a fun event.

I am saddened by the fact that the workers in this establishment have been struggling to get the unionization process going so they can rectify some issues. All they need is voluntary recognition and it would speed the process up as being recognized as a union. Employees, as well as employers, have rights, and I would think a well respected business would want to keep its employees happy? Am I correct in this thinking? I sure hope so! Please recognize them as a union and get this ball rolling so the issues they have come to realize can be fixed in timely fashion, and five star reviews can be given once more! Thank you!

Expensive, not great selection. Staff seems annoyed that you are there. Simple things like refunding something I was overcharged for required a manager. Their Covid restrictions are very strict even today in 2023. Go to Pets on Broadway or Meat for Cats and Dogs instead.

It appears that there was some kind of PR war going on in these reviews where I assume staff was campaigning amongst the customers to put pressure on the management or owner to recognize their unionization aspirations. It's notable that the management did not respond to any of those reviews which had been written by the unionization pressure campaign. It sounds like the employee union succeeded in the last few months but now I hear that the owner says that they are done and are closing both this and salty's on Mississippi. This is a real shame for the neighborhood. It seems like in an example of throwing the baby out with the bath water. I'm not sure which side of these negotiations is being unreasonable but I wish that we, as the community who loves this store, knew where to and how to give support or apply pressure ourselves to keep the store open. If it is the employee union being somehow unreasonable, I assume that the store owner feels that they would be villainized for telling their side of the story. I just don't understand why the owner would not want to sell the store to an employee run cooperative rather than get nothing and just close.

I always find what I need. The staff is always warm and welcoming. They are knowledgeable as well. When I heard the owner is fighting the staff joining a union I was disappointed. Clearly the owner doesn't respect their staff at a time when staff are difficult to find. Please recognize the union voluntarily. It will be the best of all worlds.

Plant selection is decent, but prices seem a little high for not being a specialty plant store. Mask requirement, rather than letting customers choose, seems rather outdated for 2022 and given it’s not a health care center. Storefront looks nice so I was a little disappointed overall.

Fang was such a wonderful place to shop for my pup but that’s changed now that I know the owner doesn’t support the staff unionizing. If you aren’t supporting your staff, we won’t be supporting your store. The staff makes a store what it is. They have the right to make sure they are taken care of.

Never know what will greet me here. I've had many experiences with consistently rude staff, as well as lovely, down to earth exchanges with polite ones. I've received thoughtful and helpful responses to questions as well as condescending ones from others. Plants are overpriced but well merchandised and hard to resist. It's a shame because it's so convenient to the neighborhood if you run out of pet stuff, but I feel stressed any time I have to go there.

I love everything about this place, and they have had the best COVID protocols - from day 1! - of ANY retail store I’ve been into in the last 20 months. The quality of products, both pet things and plant things, is interesting and varied. The staff are wonderful and extremely helpful, queer-friendly, and I always feel genuinely cared for as a customer. My doggo has to be in dumb gross prescription food now that is only available through the vet, so for the first time in 10+ years I have to buy somewhere else, but I’m still excited to buy weird squeaky dreidel dog toys and plants that are beyond gorgeous.

I did really enjoy this shop since I have 3 pets. Unfortunately the last time I went in, both of the workers were really rude to me which was jarring. Kind of a bummer since I came here a lot for my cats food.

I love the people who work here, they always serve me well and they always remember my dog and give him treats and pats. The one star rating is for the management and owner for delaying the unionization process and silencing the people who make your business successful in the first place. You’d be nothing without them.

Fang! Is awesome. Went in today and everyone was SO helpful and SO friendly. Maggie spent a lot of time helping me figure out the best supplements might help my pooch’s irritated skin. She was incredibly knowledgeable and was in no rush. So grateful to have them close by! Also extra thanks to them for going the extra mile and letting me park my bike in the garden center (forgot my lock) :)

I am so glad Fang is in our neighborhood. They clearly care about your pets and offer food, treats, toys and accessories to fit every need. The staff is friendly and helpful and the garden center is really great. Overall I find everyone to be knowledgeable and my pup thinks it is a fun place to visit.

Had an disappointing experience here yesterday. I know about Fang from following them on Instagram, but had never visited them before. I needed garden supplies and my Mom needed supplies for her kitty, so figured we could kill two birds with one stone. As soon as we arrived and I opened the store door we were asked to wait outside, which I have absolutely no problem with. Their door says one customer per party, unless you have two kids with you, which are allowed in, and only 4 people per entire store for safety. When an employee popped outside to tell us store rules I asked if they could accommodate both me and my Mom at the same time (once there were enough people out of the store) due to my my Mom having several incapacitating injuries. About a month ago my Mom fell down her stairs and suffered a brain bleed, a concussion, and two fractured wrists. She is still visibly recovering, and she also cannot lift anything on her own. The employee let me know it wasn't possible for us to shop together but they could assist her around the store. While I appreciate that they want to keep everyone safe, and that they were willing to help her I let the employee know I wasn't comfortable with that. I find Fangs rigid policy incredibly abelist. I don't want to have to explain my complicated life circumstances to people to get them to let me assist my Mother. As someone recovering from a Traumatic Brain Injury, while she is fully cognizant and on a path to recovery, I don't personally know the employees at the store, and if they'd convince my Mom to buy things she doesn't need. She also doesn't feel comfortable asking for help from strangers, and will not always tell them exactly what she needs, letting her kinda get steamrolled sometimes. It's really upsetting that Fang wouldn't let people who need their caretakers in with them have them. We are not people who are asking for special treatment, we are asking for reasonable accommodations for the situation we're in. We were willing to wait outside so we were part of only 4 customers in the store, but were denied. So we left empty handed and went to spend out money at Pets on Broadway, which lets me help my Mom shop with reasonable accommodations, and Portland Nursery.

i love Fang! and the workers are always so nice and willing to share whatever knowledge they have. it’s upsetting to know that the manager doesn’t support the workers unionizing. it’s hard to support a business regardless of how great they are, knowing that management doesn’t care for their workers.
