Took an unplanned pit stop on the way from NJ to Albany. It turned out a great experience. The guided tour by Wendy was a great way to learn the persona and history of the place. I would recommend stopping by on the drive to refill your curious mind and get a stamp on your nos passport. The rangers were really great in explaining things

While Martin van Buren is hardly the most famous of US presidents, he is a fascinating character who was a major political figure in the antebellum period and deserves to be far better known. Here, at the house to which he ‘retired’ after leaving the White House in 1841, a good introduction is given to the man and his later family life. The inside can only be visited on a guided tour (signed up for on arrival at the visitor centre), but it is an excellent tour led by a National Parks Service ranger. Restoration of the interior has been done sensitively, and it was a fascinating and enjoyable hour. Van Buren’s grave is just a few minutes’ drive away, the other side of Kinderhook town.

This Federal Historic Site, since 1974, has free admission with excellent Park Rangers as historians and guides. Walk the grounds like our 8th United States President, Martin Van Buren, did in the 1800s. His home, Lindenwald, located within Columbia County, New York, is a beautiful representation of a Federalist style home. From the Hudson River rock basement floor to the huge observation tower overlooking his farm property. Original and 'period' artifacts are on display as you tour the home. Come and get to know how The Red Fox of Kinderhook climbed the ladder to the 8th Presidency as the 1st American born President!

This is a fantastic place to go visit! There are a few walking trails and you can get the passport stamp at a table outside. Because of Covid the visitors center is basically closed except for the bathrooms, so no film. The tour at 10am was awesome since I had it all to myself. Learning about the house and Martin Van Buuren is well worth the visit I’d say.

Martin van Buren was the eighth U.S. president and former NY Governor, amongst other prestigious elected and appointed offices. This house is where he retired after a notable career, in the town of his birth. The tour guide rangers are very knowledgeable about the personage and local history.

We visited in October 2021 and lucked out, having the whole place to ourselves, and thus a free private guided tour. The grounds and house are very pretty. There is a lot more to the house than just the basic living spaces. The servants kitchen, basement storage and more. The painted scenery photo was part of the wallpaper. The two cemetery photos are not on these grounds, but close enough to include in your visit. A very nice stop.

Beautiful mansion that fits in the surrounding landscape. The tour guide was exceptional and in a one hour tour he explained about the era, history, politics and customs. The rooms and items displayed in it came to life. The eighth president may not have left a lasting political imprint but his local activities and efforts to bring ideas together did last.

Five stars for Lindenwald’s grounds and plaques, which are very interesting. Regrettably on this review’s day the mansion was closed for renovations, so no tours or views of the interior. Alongside Lindenwald runs Old Post Road, a one-lane unpaved path which reportedly connected New York City to Albany. In the large parking lot is a bicycle stand with tire-pump.

A great tour guide makes ALL the difference. We had Austin, who was super knowledgeable about the prez. He was super patient with my slow-mobility father. Artifacts were 70% accurate. Surprisingly better than expected.

Ground was frozen and crunchy this morning. Air was cold and clean. We only saw one other person. Did the perimeter (white) trail. 1.5 mi. So refreshing. It was calm and quiet, too.

Great little trail around a working farm and historical site. Kept the kids minds occupied on the 3.5 miles loop.

A great walking tour around the grounds and decided not to take the tour through the house. There is just so much more to the man than just being President!

We stopped at the park over the Labor Day holiday and to our surprise a friendly ranger was there under a tent sharing information. We grabbed a map and took the self-guided tour, a mile walk around the property with info kiosks along the way. Nice break from our road trip. The parking lot is small but the bathrooms were very clean.

I stopped here on a whim, hoping to get a tour even though I read it was closed. I was surprised to learn that house tours were being given for small groups, so I reserved a spot. Then a sudden thunderstorm shut down the tour!
