I've not seen a store like this in today's big box world. It's massive- not HD massive but much bigger than it appears from the street. Went in to buy a Shimumi beach tent as a gift for folks in Cape May. Had both sizes and as my wife and I were chatting at the counter, the cashier overheard we have to find wrapping paper someplace in town. "We can wrap that" she said- went to back of store and done in 3 minutes - even had 8 choices of paper. Then on our way back, cards! We then walked the store and were amazed at the inventory of everything and anything this place has. You don't get small town customer service these days- and what a cool store. Old school isn't dead after all.

4/8 10:17 am Called to see if a particular mulch was in stock as it hadn't been last week. The woman answering the phone bizarrely said "Swains. No sunglasses" in a very rude way. I stated that I was not calling about glasses but rather much, and that had I actually been calling about glasses it would have been an extremely unprofessional way to answer the phone. I've lived in Cape May and have been going to Swains for 3 decades, and while their staff is a bit strange at times, they generally aren't usually rude. I get that they're irritated that people are calling asking for solar glasses but not ALL your customers are calling for that; even if they WERE, it is quite literally your job - the one you're being paid to perform - to assist customers not only in person but also on the phone. Very rude.

I’m an admitted Ace Hardware junkie. I like the fact that although they all are similar, many carry unique items in stock. This Ace is one of the best I’ve ever been. Huge inventory with all kinds of hard to find items. The store was extremely clean and neat with friendly and helpful employees.

A fully stocked hardware store located in the center of historic Cape May. Everything you could want from beach chairs to pellet grills. Everything is in order, the help knows the layout when asking for what you need. Overall a great place to get anything hardware related.

Very nice place. I'm out of town and needed some supplies. Very well stocked. They had everything I needed. Every aisle was full. Workers are very helpful. Definitely recommend going there.

Swains is one of the best hardware stores you will ever find. I love how it saves from travel to Rio Grande. More importantly, my experiences with the knowledgeable, friendly and professional staff far outweigh the impersonal attention at the big box stores. The folks at Swains will go out of their way to answer your questions and address your issue without fear that they are trying to upsell or do anything but correctly address your hardware issue. You can find almost anything you need at Swains and the convenience of finding it right in town without fighting traffic and crowds is well worth paying a few pennies more. That said, I find its pricing to be very reasonable.

The is a great hardware store. I visit every year while I'm on vacation. They have such unique items and the staff is very friendly and just looking around is enjoyable. No pressure to buy although I always find several things to buy!

Friendly, helpful, knowledgeable staff that can help you find those tiny, hard to find replacement parts. Even the prices are reasonable. This is now our go to hardware store.

Parked here to buy a few things and then walk out to do the rest of our shopping, thinking that as customers they wouldn’t tow our car if it stayed for an hour or so. On our way to the door someone let us know “sorry it’s a private lot no parking.” I turned my group around and we promptly left. Would rather not buy from a business that literally foot patrols their lot and turns people away from their front door. Can’t leave more than a star because we didn’t even make it inside.

Doesn't get better than this place. Great full service and complete hardware store and paint store but this place is much more than just that. They have all kinds of other stuff...everything from kitchen tools to seasonal decorations. Awesome!

Great store. Staff couldn't be friendlier or more knowledgable. I am an 'advanced' diy guy and they have been able to help me with many questions. They've even lent me a tool to help complete the job. Not many places like that left. Very lucky to have them in town

Swain's, established in 1896, is the hardware store to go to. Large selection of all household needs. The quality and prices are comparable with big box stores. The service and knowledge of the staff far surpasses the big box stores. Buy local and keep one landmark in the community.

Big box hardware stores just don't compare to Swain's, with it's unparalleled customer service. Indeed, just called in payment for a renter who needs a grill part and they're going to help them when they get there (5 min. ago). And I do that whenever I need propane tank exchange for the grill or anything. Needed a new grill once, too, and they delivered same day assembled on site. Not only that, but they carry everything I've ever needed or wanted-- including Miele vacuums (bought 2 there), which I don't think I could've found for 100 miles around. Have been going there almost every day I'm down since I bought a house in Cape May (because you always need something once you own an old house) in 1992. Yes, they know me by name, ask about the kids, the dogs, & help out within a minute of walking in-- and it's a real family business. Love it!

Planned on mounting our GoPro to my daughters surf board but forgot a drill. Called them up and they said come on over and ask for Jordan. Jordan drilled the holes got the necessary hardware for me. Was in and out within 10 minutes, project complete, spent $2.68. Thanks a ton!

Swain's World ya ya! (think of the movie Wayne's World, catchy, isn't it?) Love this place. It's like an old fashioned general store combined with a modern hardware store. Can't visit Cape May without a stop at Swain's World ya ya!
