A marvelous snapshot of American history. Was so glad that we stopped here. Not only was it a great stop to break up a long drive, bu it was a short drive off the road and easy to get to.Loved the sidewalk design in the shape of the Lewis and Clark expedition. Great visitor center. Well done maps and exhibits. The stairway to the signature was easy, as was the slightly more demanding stairway to Clark's panorama on top of the pillar. Great views. Glad we took 30-60 minutes to make the stop.

I was driving along he interstate and saw a Brown Sign for Pompeys Pillar National Monument. I had so extra time and decided to check it out and I a really glad I did. I used my National Park Senior Pass to Gain Entrance to the Monument at no charge. I did however leave a donation in the visitor’s center. Parking was convenient and located just a short walk from the visitor’s center which has a very nice interpretive center. As always, the National Park Rangers and staff are extremely friendly and knowledgeable. Leaving the visitors center I walked out the paved path, reading the storyboard along the way. Arriving at the Pillar, there are stairs that you can use to make your way to the top. About halfway up I came to the William Clark Signature that he carved in the stone during the Lewis and Clark Exposition. Clark Carved his signature and date into the side of the Pillar when he camped here in the summer of 1806. His signature is visible behind glass which protects it from the elements and vandalism. After stopping at the Clark Signature, I continued my climb up the stairs to the top of the pillar. During my visit it was very windy, but the view of the Yellowstone River and the surround landscape were amazing. All total I spent about an hour and a half at the site which included taking in the exhibits at the visitor’s center and a leisurely walk out to the pillar and back. For anyone who enjoys history, this would be an amazing stop, and even if you don’t the views from the top of the Pillar would make worth the stop. This was a great spur of the moment stop for me.

A really neat place! You can see 360 degree views from the top! They just opened on Friday as they were closed due to flooding. All the trails are still closed but you can walk the 200 steps to the top and visit the pristine interpretive center! Staff was extremely friendly and helpful!

This is the only place there is clear evidence that Clark off the Lewis and Clark Expedition actually was. It’s in the form of his name and date carved into a sandstone rock. There are additional names also visible of travelers who passed by. It is right on the Yellowstone River. There are a little over 200 steps up the rock. 100 to where you can see the signature of William Clark and others, then another 100 to the top of the rock. The view from there is stunning! You can see a great distance 360 degrees mostly farm land and fields but also a section of the Yellowstone River.

Great little stop to see a part of history. You can view where William Clark, from the famous Lewis and Clark Expedition, etched his name in rock on his return route. There is a boardwalk with stairs that leads all the way to the top for a fantastic view of the surrounding countryside.

This is a very nice park we happened to stumble upon. It's small but very well maintained and the staff was very friendly. It closes rather early, 6pm when we were there, but it is very easy to get a look at the monument pretty quickly. You do need a fair bit of tolerance for stairs to make it to the top of the monument. Because it is sandstone you are walking on stairs built around it, rather than on the rock itself. On the monument you can get a look at William Clark's name carved into the rock and get a nice view of the surrounding area from the top. There are other trails around the monument as well, but we did not take them because the mosquitoes were very bad there. Mosquito repellent was available for purchase in the Visitor Center.

While the Interpretive Center is closed for the season, as long as you visit during daylight hours and don't mind a hike, you can still see the important part, which is William Clark's signature.Bonus for visiting on the off-season is it's free 😉

Really fun quick visit. Rangers were helpful and plenty of information available at the visitor center. Lots of detail given to the walking paths to make the experience interactive. RV parking available and a few shaded picnic spots. Takes about an hour to two hours to see everything.

Very cool place. The site is beautifully landscaped while keeping it natural. Lots of signatures from early explorers. Be prepared for lots of steps to view signatures and look out from viewing platforms. They are not handicap accessible. The visitors center is excellent. Staff highly knowledgeable, friendly, and anxious to share information.

Love this Little-Known Gem!OK, so Clark (Yep, of Lewis & Clark fame) went by here and carved his name in a rock on his return from having gone "West, Young Man." Is that a big deal? You'll definitely vote YES after your visit. The Bureau of Land Management had done a stellar job here. The museum/visitors' center is meticulously researched and beautifully presented. You'll have fun learning tons of things about the L & C expedition you never knew. The view from atop the pillar is gorgeous (and an easy climb thanks to a solid, meandering boardwalk). Standing next to Clark's signature in the rock is surprisingly moving. Rangers and volunteers are quite knowledgeable and very nice. The gift shop is beautiful.TIP:If you're pulling a trailer or driving an RV and headed east from Hardin, do not follow your GPS's advice to take Fly Creek Road. It's shorter but is gravel and a killer to your trailer axel.

National Monument that was absolutely FREE to experience. Kids loved the Jr Ranger program and learned a lot about the Lewis and Clark expedition. Definitely do this if you're in the area... You won't regret it

Pretty interesting place. This is where William Clark (Lewis & Clark) carved his name and date of his visit, on this rock formation along the Yellowstone River, in Montana. Looks like a great place for a family picnic and a place for a nice stroll. Offers spectacular views!

What a neat piece of history! I’m so glad we drove a little bit out of our way to see it. The place was closed when we arrived. But they have a parking lot near the road where you can walk down a path about a mile maybe not quite to the pillar. Then around to all the stairs to reach the signature!

We stopped for a few hours and it was definitely worth it. There is a learning center that has some well done displays. We went from there to the top of the pillar and we enjoyed a great view. We had our 30' travel trailer and parking was fine. No place for overnight camping with a RV. Easy on off the interstate.

Pompey’s pillar is a key aspect of the US history and this national park displays it very well. There is a gift shop, exhibit and theatre that you can look at and learn from. Highly recommend stopping by here!

A Historical WOW! The only place in the country you can see physical evidence of Lewis and Clark's journey well over 200 years ago. And you'll learn even more. For example, see the connection to Colonel Custer at this location as well. Learn about the creation of bullboats and how that may have had and European influence. Also, learn of Troy and his very progressive influence on the journey. If you can make it here, DO!

It was amazing although there were a lot of bugs so I recommend bug spray but the view was amazing and you even got to see Clark's signature from the Lewis and Clark expedition to explore the Louisiana purchase

This is our history! A great place to stop for both young and old. History and nature and an amazing view of the Yellowstone River. Pull through RV parking is a little short for big rigs towing a car but both times we've been there it wasn't crowded so we just let the Jeep stick out a little.

A wonderful excursion from our vacation in the area of Yellowstone and Great Teton National Parks! This park is a good place to feel the beautiful country near the Missouri River head, explored by L&C after the Louisiana Purchase!

The last evidence of the Lewis and Clark expedition. I purposely left off a pic of the actual signature because if you dont know you should read up on this site. The staff was very informative. I only wish we had more time to explore the area.
