Ok, so, this is a typical motel like cabin set up. Not everything is up to date, and not everything is brand new. So if you expect that I don't know what to tell you. But if you don't mind the aged cabin ascetic, you won't be disappointed. It's worth the view of this beautiful lake. Everything works, and everything is the way you would think a family cabin resort would look like. They have screen doors on the cabins that shut with spring controlled, so if you have problems with loud noises, just something to be aware of. Overall, this is what I think of when I think of going up north. I personally loved it. I would love to come up in the summer. Fun spot. It's right next to the busy road so if you stay in the motel rooms you're going to hear it. Stayed in motel room 7, and I would do it again.

Solbakken is right on Lake Superior in Lutsen - approximately 16 miles south of Grand Marais. This is a private/family owned resort with outstanding Customer Service and they really go above and beyond! I would highly recommend staying here!Rooms: Stocked with the necessities! If you want something that isn’t in your room they do their best to a accommodateNearby activities: Just ask the staff and they will refer you. I stayed for my birthday and I asked where a good place to eat dinner (I wasn’t cooking) and was referred to a few restaurants in Grand Marais. We really enjoyed My Sisters Place, the juicy Lucy was a big hit!Noteworthy details: Rustic atmosphere and they went to great detail to make it feel warm and cozy.I absolutely loved it here and the magnificent views. I definitely plan on returning 😊

Just got home from a 4-night stay at the Caribou Guest House. There were 10 of us - my wife and I and our daughters, their husbands, and their kids. The Caribou House was purely magnificent. The view of Caribou Lake thru the main floor windows was like God’s own wide screen TV. The grandkids appreciated both the wide open spaces in the house as well as the strong internet signal that allowed time on their devices during down times. The House is conveniently located and it’s just a short jaunt to Grand Marais or just a bit farther south to Beaver Bay. For years we’d stay in resorts on the Lake Superior shoreline which fed the kids’ agate hunting obsessions. There are no agate beaches on Caribou but it’s only a five minute drive to a couple of primo agate hunting beaches. The amenities at the House were impressive (even included washer/dryer) and we were all as smitten on the day we left as the day we arrived. And, yes, we reserved again for next year. Thank you, Solbakken, for a wonderful stay ay this spectacular place.

We stayed here in early April. It was just what we were looking for.The motel room was warm and cozy. While it is small it had everything we needed. The view overlooking the lake was beautiful. While it was to cool to enjoy the back deck if you are the one the summer it would be a great spot to sit and enjoy the view of lake superior.

Cabin 6 was cozy, clean, and efficient with a nice deck. Just my size & just steps away from the lapping waves of Lake Superior. Bed looked through a double window towards the water. Within easy driving distance of at least two state parks, the Gunflint Trail, and restaurants & supermarkets in Lutsen & Grand Marais though cabin is equipped with a range & fridge. Large fireplace made me dream of a winter stay.

I was up on the Superior Hiking trail this past weekend with our Scout troop and left the parking lot at Caribou Lake with my tailgate down. Got home and was missing one of my boots. We are leaving for an 85 mile backpacking trip at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico in 11 days. No time to break in new boots. These ones took me 6 months of wearing regularly to get past the hot spots and blisters. I'm in Anoka 5 hours away.I called a few local businesses asking if they would go look at the trailhead for them and call me if they found them. All said no except Solbakken Resort. They sent an employee to look in the parking lot and along the road on Caribou Trail. They found them and are mailing them to me.Super nice helpful people and I am so incredibly grateful. Giving my shout out to a great business with great owners and employees.Lets all throw some love and business to Solbakken Resort on hwy 61 on the North shore of Superior in MN.

The cutest place I have stayed at! I stayed in motel #11 and it was the coziest, cabin feeling experience. It was nothing like you'd think when you hear "motel". The only negative comments are: the door locks are a bit janky, the bathroom was extremely small, but that is not a big deal. and the TV did not work, but that is no bother to me- you're up north, soak in the nature :) As for the staff, I didn't have much interaction with them, but they were not extremely welcoming, however, they were not rude either. The kitchenette was great and included many appliances which I loved. The view of the lake is beautiful and you can see it from bed. It's got a nice deck area to relax on. This is the cutest place ever and I will definitely visit again and stay in a cabin next time- I'm excited. Thank you! :)

I stayed here back in about 2005. Rented a cabin with a girlfriend at the time. This place was wonderful! We stayed lakeside for several days and it was magical. They kept us well stocked with firewood and watching the storm come rolling in on the lake was something I have not forgotten. The cabin was small but well done and everything I could have hoped for.

Been coming here for decades (which should pretty much say it all). There are units in the lodge, motel style units and cabins. Some of the cabins are right on Lake Superior. Get a cabin on the lake and sleep with the windows open so you can hear the waves. Sit on the deck with a book (or kindle), sip since coffee while listening to nature or do nothing other than close your eyes and let your mind wander elsewhere.

been here probably 5-6 times. most visits just with my wife but one visit we rented a cabin with another couple. This place is amazing. words don't do it justice. Everyone I know that has been here loves it as well.Literally only drawback is in the Winter it may get tough getting up some of the hills in your vehicle to get out to the ski resort. if going in the winter AWD is a must.

We enjoyed our recent stay at the Solbakken Resort. We stayed in the motel section and although small, it was a charming room with a great patio. The TVs were not working, but the staff was apologetic and said that they were in the process of having them repaired. To be honest, having a break from TV was refreshing -- particularly in this cabin-like setting. The room was quite clean, though my only complaint was that the bathroom could use updating -- newer decor and fixtures.

My roommate and I stayed here after coming out of the boundry waters with my dog. I appreciated they allowed pets, gave treats, poo bags and extra bedding special for my dog. The room was quaint, had a woodsy cabin feel, and I used the kitchenette more than I had anticipated. The view of lake superior was worth every penny and we enjoyed our stay at Solbakken Resort.

Prepaid for two separate stays here. Wish I hadn't. Won't be coming back. The site I booked on said wifi, and breakfast but the service desk said there was none. The room had an awful stink to it and the sheets and plow cases had stains where dirty. The furniture was filthy and stained badly. This place didn't even have a tub and the TV doesn't work. Of course they put us in the same room the second time too. I noticed on the second time the wifi password Info by the front desk at check out which really made me mad they lied to me about it. I booked it for work and needed the wifi I could have gone somewhere else that at least had what they said they had before they took my money. Awful awful place.

Took my little sister on our yearly sister trip here! It was beautiful! The back deck view was incredible! We had a great stay and ate at some great local places! Very friendly staff, quiet evenings and even a Jacuzzi! So nice!!

Great place, glad we found it! Beautiful lakefront and everything we needed in our suite. Staff was fantastic. The only reason for not giving five stars is that there was a lot of noise/movement overhead each night - maybe a dog in the space above our unit or something (we were in Lillehammer). Otherwise excellent, looking forward to trying one of the lakefront cabin units next time.

Loved. Low key, had #7 motel room that looked right over the lake. Picked up supper and ate on the back private deck attached to room. Rooms were clean. Staff were friendly. Will be going here again for sure. Only 4 miles to Lutsen ski area.

100% Disappointment! We arrived to stay in one of the motel-style rooms (#7), the musty, disgusting smell in the room was overpowering. I had an immediate allergy and asthma reaction, turned in our keys and left immediately. Only a partial refund was provided according to their policy. I would not recommend staying here. Sad to see such a wonderful location completely miss the mark on cleanliness and service.

Our family stayed at one of the large separate cabins on the property. Very close to the water with a gorgeous yard and views. Nice fire ring and log seats right over the rocky beach. The cabin itself was very ample and was stocked with everything we needed. Clean cabin and very friendly staff. Lovely bathrooms and fireplace. However, at the time (late 2016) the beds were uncomfortable, which posed a problem for some of the family.

Really charming place to stay on a budget. Has a very authentic, northern MN charm with old-school cabins and an awesome view of the lake. There is a nice hot tub and sauna!! Didn’t see anything mentioned of this in other reviews so wanted to point it out here. Don’t forget your swimsuit! One star off because our bathroom was really outdated, and the shower barely worked. Bed wasn’t the most comfortable... but overall for the price, would definitely recommend this place.

Went to see the sights and came back to maintenance man in our room. Had no idea there was anything to be fixed. Didn't feel very relaxed after that. Also, we didn't realize there's no restaurant. Our fault not there's. We just would've brought more groceries. Surrounding stores and restaurants very pricey. Adorable kitchenette, complete with just about anything you need. Pots, pans, dishes, glassware, etc. Small fridge. Clean room, close to the lake. Beautiful setting.

We stayed here and it is very rustic, that is the polite way to describe it. The lodge is very nice however our suite left us disappointed. There is no TV other than a couple of channels via Dish satellite. The WiFi is available sometimes, mostly in the lodge. The bathroom did not have a mirror over the sink so that I could shave, I had to use the bathroom in the hall. The toilet paper is single ply and the room had a musty oder. The ceiling had spots of mold and the refrigerator did not have a icemaker, only one small ice tray.I could continue but I think I have said enough.I will say that the view was fabulous from our suite and the staff was friendly.

Loved our cute little motel room!! We (husband, 5, 2 & 1 y/o boys) stopped in, around 7:30 PM and were pleasantly accommodated. We will be back to rent a cabin. Can't beat the sunrise view on Lake Superior, or the price ! What a great location! Thank you!

We recently stayed in the Telemark lodge suite. Very cozy with a beauitful view of the lake from the deck. Very relaxing sitting on the deck or on the room with the door/window open. Bed was very comfortable. Best we have slept on in our travels lately. Staff are all very friendly and knowledgeable of the resort and area. Summer is a great person to chat with. No question we will be back.

Nice view of the lake and good location, but it has several problems. First and foremost it’s really noisy. You can hear every footstep, cough, or word spoken by anyone in the neighboring rooms. When someone shuts their front door it shakes the entire building. The rooms also smell musty, and the curtains don’t block out the bright lights in the parking lot. The beds aren’t comfortable and seemed unusually short. This place has potential, but there are too many little problems.
