Looking for a fun and quasi educational spot in Traverse City? Look no further than Peninsula Cellars! This winery is a true gem, as it used to be the Maple Grove School house that operated from 1896 until 1956. So not only will you get to enjoy amazing drinks, but you'll also get a history lesson with each sip.I recently visited Peninsula Cellars and tried one of their cider flights. The ciders were all delicious, but my absolute favorite was the Cinnamon Swirl cider. It tasted like I was drinking a warm slice of apple pie, minus the utensils. The staff at Peninsula Cellars were also top-notch. They were so friendly and knowledgeable about the history of the place. The atmosphere is so nostalgic. There's something so cozy and inviting about drinking in an old schoolhouse. It's like you're transported to a simpler time where you don't have to worry about adulting or paying bills. Plus, there's a lovely outdoor seating area where you can enjoy your drinks and take in the beautiful surroundings.I highly recommend Peninsula Cellars to anyone visiting Traverse City if you’re looking for a non-traditional winder setting. You get great drinks, a cool history lesson, and a warm and welcoming atmosphere - what more could you ask for? Just make sure to bring a designated driver because those ciders pack a punch!

My favorite winery on the peninsula! I'm not a huge wine drinker but they had some different offerings then just the standard glass of wine and on top of that they were also delicious. I had the sangria and a frozen wine drink.Out of all the wineries it has the most character with all the little details that go along with the fact it was originally a school house. The ladies that helped us were also the most fun and we didn't feel like we were being rushed.

DOG FRIENDLYLet me order first before going outside - this was so appreciated! (I didn’t feel shunned like at Bonobo Winery). I planned my trip around my dog, so this was the most important for me.The cinnamon swirl cider was amazing. The wines I chose for my flight were alright but I could’ve chosen differently. The atmosphere and friendly staff made the experience.Thank you! And

A winery in an old schoolhouse. Former teachers are rolling over in their graves! The sweet wines were delicious! Menage and Melange had complex delicious notes. Service was excellent. Highly recommend!

I just ADORE this place so much!I have an obsession with old schoolhouses and this one did not leave me disappointed. The original one-room schoolhouse charm (complete with the original blackboards) was abundant while still being the perfect place for a tasting room. My husband and I each got a flight of 4 wines to try. I am more of a sweet wine lover and there were plenty of wines for me to choose from. The girl working the counter (I wish I could remember her name) was able to circle the sweet wines on the menu and offered recommendations to assist me in my decisions. The names of some of the wines were creative and fit perfectly with the schoolhouse theme. Those names included Detention, Homework, and Pop Quiz. All 3 were on the sweeter side and were SO GOOD. We drank our wine outside on a beautiful June day (this was also due in part to some of the Covid restrictions still in place). I cannot say enough good things about Peninsula Cellars - it is a must-stop if you are in Traverse City/Old Mission Peninsula! We will be back for sure!

Unpretentious and low key! I’m not really a wine drinker, but I felt comfortable and welcome here. And not rushed like at other places on the peninsula. We tried a cider flight and a wine flight! The place is in an old schoolhouse building which had some nice character but is a bit small. It was fall and we sat outside on the patio, but I’m not sure if they have heated/enclosed outdoor seating in winter?

The service was quite good and the setting in a retired school house is really cool! Lots of selections and plenty of swag available.Parking is great too!Unfortunately, the seating inside was completely taken by 2 Bachelorette parties so we had to sit outside on a rainy day. There is a big selection of wines and these were ok, but nothing spectacular.Overall we had a great time.

The tasting room is based in a redesigned old school house. Peninsula cellars offers delicious selection of wine with titles that have all school based themes. For only a dollar per tasting try at least 10. The newest is a light sweet white called summer vacation which is perfect for a summer afternoon.

Great place for tastings and hanging out. I'm normally not a huge fan of sweet drinks, but they had my favorite wines and ciders out of the handful of wineries we tried. Plus the staff was friendly

Excellent wine tastings- this is a great winemaker if you prefer fruit-forward, sweeter wines. I enjoyed their dry wines even though I do not typically enjoy dry whites. I was so impressed that I walked out with 12 bottles. Barbara, Carissa, and Anna took great care of me and all of the other visitors! Very knowledgeable and friendly. Peninsula Cellars is worth the visit! Stand-outs include Detention, Summer Vacation, and the Semidry Riesling.

Super cool that the schoolhouse has been kept in great condition since the late 1800s! There is a wide selection of various wines and even a frozen (slushee) Riesling! Got a flight to try a few, most of the sweet wines are tasty. A great place to visit and excited to see how it continues to grow!

We stopped here on a whim on the way back from Mission Point Lighthouse. Of the five cideries we stopped at during our vacation, this was at the top. We shared a flight of four ciders (cinnamon, cherry habanero, cider mojito, and strawberry) and each had an apple pie slushie. Our favorite after the slushie, was the cinnamon. Everything was phenomenal. We could have spent the entire afternoon doing flights, as their large selection of wines looked awesome too. It is set in an old school house with outdoor seating only. Everyone was friendly and helpful. We'd return often if we lived in the state.

Excellent and helpful staff. They know their product well. We sampled three reds and a few ciders. Being a hard cider fan, I was impressed with their cider selection, ended up buying both the peach and raspberry apple cider in cans. I can see that this place will become a regular stop whenever we’re up on the peninsula. As a side note, they don’t accept cash, card only. They do accept cash tips though.

I’ve been to multiple wineries/vineyards on the peninsula but this was by far the favorite of my group. Great service and amazing wine. Love all the various seating options too! Definitely add this to your list when you visit

While visiting the Traverse City area, my wife and I took an afternoon drive up the peninsula. There are wineries all along M37. Knowing nothing about any of them, we picked a couple at random to visit, Peninsula Cellars being one of them. We loved it!Located in an old schoolhouse, the building maintains some neat history that the winery really dives into. The winery sells both wine and cider that it makes itself. We ordered a flight of wine, which was some of the best wine we had the whole trip! The cherry wines in particular were wonderful! The lone gentleman working the bar seemed a bit overwhelmed -- he did admit to me that it was busier than they typically see for a Tuesday afternoon -- but was very warm, friendly and helpful. For a unique experience and delicious wines, I would highly recommend Peninsula Cellars to anyone!

MUST STOP!! We would give this place a 10 out of 5 if we could! Every year we come up to our lake house and Peninsula Cellars is our first stop. The atmosphere is always wonderful, the Detention chalk board get me every time, and the wine is nothing short of spectacular. Of all the wineries on Old Mission, Cellars always has the wine that makes us go “Oooooo!” We buy a case every time. I myself am more of a semi dry/sweet wine gal and let me tell you, the Stainless Chardonnay is Amazing!!! The detention and Late Harvest Riesling are also show stoppers. We do miss the school desk as that is our staple picture! If you’re unable to check out all wineries on the peninsula make sure Peninsula Cellars is on your list because the school house and their wines won’t disappoint!! Thanks Peninsula for another great year.— The Nebraskans, your #1 fans

A wonderful winery. Located in a refurbished one-room schoolhouse. Excellent wine, I can personally speak to the quality of the merlot.
