I recently visited Maid Rites West in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, with my heart set on a classic Maid Rite experience. Growing up with these sandwiches in Springfield, Illinois, I had high expectations. The place had that charming old small vibe, complete with a red and white colorsBut then, the disappointment hit. They have a full menu of things that aren't Maid Rites! Come on, folks, focus on your specialty. The meat wasn't steamed like it should be, and there was a distinct lack of that essential spice or any flavor to the meat And let's talk about the bun – it was as cold as ice.I asked for pickles, and they plopped on giants! In a real Maid Rite, they should be finely diced and sautéed together with the meat. The same goes for the onions and mustard – they should all be part of the recipe.In the end, I received what could best be described as a loose meat sandwich. While I appreciate the attempt at variety, it wasn't what I had come for. The cheese was practically invisible, and though ketchup and mustard tried their best, the overall experience was lacking.If I had to rate it, I'd give it three out of five stars just because they attempt to make Maid Rites. Plus, the staff was friendly and full of history lessons. But here's my suggestion, Maid Rites West: it's time to go back to the basics. Focus on perfecting the classics, steam those buns, and steam the meat so it stays hot and not open for unwanted guests. Maid Rites should be a nostalgic delight, not a letdown. 👍🍔🌭

Finally got to try one since I saw a tv special many years ago titled “Sandwiches you will love” on PBS. They’re very tasty and unique. Kinda like a sloppy Joe without any sauce. Maid-Rite is the brand, but they’re referred to as loose meat sandwiches. They can be ordered with your choice of toppings and condiments just like a hamburger. I tried 3 different ones, a plain with onions, mushroom & swiss, and a Cheese-Rite which wound up as my favorite because the cheese is already melted when it’s ladled onto the sandwich and really blends with the loose meat. Crinkle cut fries are perfection. But the most pleasant surprise was some of the meals that are on daily specials. The goulash was the best I’ve ever had since my grandmother passed decades ago. Only $6.00 and served with thick sliced bread and real butter. I will be back for more, in fact, I think the name should be changed to Goulash-Rite 🤣.

Last Maid Rite I had was over 50 years. Then it was very tasty. Now?, not so much! Perhaps because my tastes have changed. In any rate, not impressed. Building was in deplorable condition. Not real neat and orderly.Vegetarian options: Vegetarian , NOT!Parking: Parking is in an alley.Wheelchair accessibility: None

Had great experience first time in to pick up food for dinner. Very friendly counter service! Food was great, the hot turkey sandwich was my fav, big chunks of real turkey!!! Only 36$ for hot turkey sandwich, hot beef sandwich, fried mushrooms, goulash, big maid rite basket with a chocolate malt (not pictured , it didn't make it home!!!).

I grew up with one of these in my home town, and it was every bit exactly how I remembered it. There aren't many around anymore but it's still as good as it has ever been.The malts were divine as well.

Ashamed that this is representative of Iowa Maid-Rite establishments. Purchased goulash and 2 maid-rites. Goulash tasted like it had been sitting in grease prior to heating in microwave. Sandwiches had zero flavor also. This Maid-Rite location has been their all my life (75 years) and used to have very good food. Will NOT use this location again. I would not suggest to others to eat here.

I loved this place as a little boy. And now, almost 50 years old, it is still putting out quality food.I brought my girlfriend back from Washington State bragging about their Maidrites. And she swore they would bot be any good, Maid-Rite West didn't let me down, and now I have been charged with making these when we get home.If you want a taste of Iowa, then vome here!
