My husband and I visited Safe Haven for the first time yesterday. The shelter is very clean and well organized. The cats and dogs are well cared for. One cat, Billy, who doesn't get along with other cats, is kept separately in a nice room. Dogs have access to open space. I'm very impressed with the cleanliness, attention and care embodied at the shelter.

This is one of the best animal shelters I have ever been to. The staff I met was very friendly and helpful throughout the adoption process. I absolutely love their set up for the adoptable kitties. I got the impression that the cats and kittens thrive well while waiting for their new forever home. I did not see the dog area but I was impressed with the care of the cats.I ended up adopting a beautiful, shy and sweet 2 year old male kitty and he acclimated instantly into his new home with his new kitty brother.I doubt I'll need to adopt for a long time but if I was ever in the need to I would absolutely start with Safe Haven.

We adopted a kitten yesterday and I was so impressed with this shelter. I grew up in JD County but am now living in the suburbs. The staff was amazing, the facility and kitten so clean and I am confident our boy has received optimum care until he was placed in our arms.

It might be helpful to know the last 2 1-star reviews are from an disgruntled ex-employee who was terminated for multiple policy infractions including creating a hostile work environment and harassment. The employees are some of the best and most knowledgeable animal caregivers I've ever met and provide some of the cleanest and happy conditions for the animals I've seen in a shelter. Go visit and judge for yourself, you won't be disappointed.

Safe Haven was very nice to work with. My wife, kids, and I went in last summer to look at a young male puppy. He was very shy when we met him but we have now had him for over a year. What a great addition to our family. I think the staff and volunteers there do a nice job making sure we were a great fit. They even made sure we were aware that he tears up his bedding at night and they wanted us to be prepared for some of the typical puppy mis-behaviors like chewing and potty training. Our dog has been a great addition who loves trail rides, boating, and playing with us every day! Thank you so much Safe Haven!

Stopped in to see who was there. Almost walked out with 2 kittens. They explained, care about all the cats and are patient with potential parents.

I feel very assured that this wonderful organization truly care about the best interests of the pets they care for. They have a really nice and thorough as possible application process to help fit the applicant and pets needs. We had good conversations full of information to make just the right decision. Please adopt and enjoy your pet!

Apparently integrity and customer service aren't on the docket for the staff at Safe Haven. Being the first to apply for a dog and offer it a good home come second to special favors and bias at this facility. After having our application in 1st, driving 2 hours to this facility, and them insisting my children meet the dog, they deny us because the dog would have to be alone for two 3 hour chunks during the day. This policy of insisting the children meet the dog and become emotionally attached..then to only pull the rug out from underneath them is completely unsatisfactory...especially when they know this dog will be going to a great home...

They are wonderful, thoughtful, kind, caring staff that take great measures to make sure that their rescue pets get adopted to the right people. We rescued our dog from them on December 23 and she has become one of our family members. Hopefully all rescued pets from there settle into their new homes as well as Mitzi (now Ivy) has done with us.

Do not get your hopes up of adopting an animal from this facility. Our family viewed a dog on Saturday, December 16, 2017 and were told no one else had viewed him yet. I filled out an application for adoption, and offered to pay for him that day. The girl who helped us put a large number 1 on my application and I was told we were first in line for adopting him. I received a call today stating that the dog was going to another family that had filled out an application prior to me. I knew that was untrue because two separate staff members told me my application was the first and only for this dog. It's unfortunate the way the staff at this facility treats loving families who want to provide a safe and happy home for their animals. If you're looking to adopt, I would encourage you to go elsewhere.

I found their website when looking for a pug. They had 2 pugs that came in together. I wanted them both but at least wanted one of them. They sent a reply within 5 min. I went right away. The place was clean and the young lady that waited on me was friendly and professional. I meet Peaches and Pepper and fell in love. Within an hour they were ready to go. The gentleman that assisted her was also friend and professional. It was a great experience for me and I am forever thankful for Safe Haven.Maureen KleinerDubuque, IA

I recently visited Safe Haven with one of my children, the facilities were clean and proper, but when asked if we could see the dogs a woman on the staff was very rude to us and acted like we were inconveniencing her day, she told us we would not be be able to have the dog we asked about, then offered to show us puppies but never did... Then brought out another dog for us to spend time with. She and another staff member that was a man pretty much talked over me when I was trying to make conversation with the female staff member... Seemed to me they could have cared less we were there... My child and I were looking for a friend who lost a dog a year ago. I used to volunteer at a shelter and took in rescue pets, but I had cancer for a while and had to stop doing that. I absolutely love working with animals and would have loved to donate my time to help, but the staff whether they were employees or volunteers were extremely rude to not only myself but my daughter... Might I recommend manners and basic human kindness when people come into your shelter to look at your lovely fur babies??? Even my daughter was disheartened after that visit...

Very disappointing for my children and myself. Went to adopt a cat (that is currently still available, even though a loving family was waiting for her, to take her home to meet a loving family. I guess I just don't understand, after driving 45 minutes to meet her, I never received a call. Sad and disappointed. We would have loved her so much. Goes to show not every place takes the time to adopt out when good families come along :(

We were informed that we do not live in a home since the dog we wanted to adopt would be an outside farm dog. Since the dog would not have a "home" according to the staff, we were unable to adopt an Australian Shepherd puppy. We were offended that since the dog would be outside, it meant there was no home there and that we did not have a home either.

Just a fantastic “Haven”. Their desire to find homes for all stray dogs is due to their love and devotion to animals,
