We needed to put our Doberman down and called the humane society for end of life services. They were very nice and accommodating, very sensitive to what was going on for us. Would highly recommend. Cost is $25. We took her back home with us and buried her in her favorite spot in our yard.

Visited this facility today for the first time and was very impressed! You could feel the love all the workers had for the animals, trying to give them all as much love and attention as they can until they find their forever homes. They seem to have just enough animals that they can provide adequate care to and I appreciate that they know when they are at their max, as they are currently not accepting any more dogs. Please please please consider getting your next pet from here instead of purchasing it from either a licensed or backyard breeder!! There are sooooo many perfect and loving animals that are deserving of happy homes and full lives. I wish I could take them all home, but I know when the time comes for me to get another dog I will 100% be coming here after seeing how many perfect angels there are ready for adoption. Clean facilities, great workers, great mission. Do anything you can to support them- even just donate!

I love the dog for a day program( I think they call it something else) that allows people to get a shelter dog out of the shelter for the day, it’s awesome. The cleanliness of the kennels was questionable at best. however the receptionists were all very friendly and helpful. And the doggies are always awesome always. They give you treats to give the dogs when you walk through. I hope Gremmie gets adopted soon. She is an awesome well mannered small dog.

Today I saw silly dogs including a fuzzy white one and one that is the color of a chocolate chip cookie. The staff was hard at work cleaning the kennels and greeting visitors. In the cat house is the most beautiful, friendly little blue eyed cat. I think they call her Bubbles. She talks! I hope she finds a loving home soon.

Wonderful experience getting our kitten neutered. Affordable care. A real gem. Just make sure to get on the wait list early enough so your kitty doesn't start spraying.

The Hawaii Island Humane Society also has a Bark Park! This is an off leash dog park facility open to the public. Although it is a smaller off leash park, it is well maintained and offers a variety of exploration for canines. There is an area for smaller dogs and a separate area for midsize to larger dogs. Toys are available as well as a water tub, fire hydrant, water hose, pavilion, trees, and taller foliage areas. I brought my 30# Staffordshire Bull Terrier here and he had a blast. Be aware that you MUST be cognizant of your own dogs behavior. If they are overwhelmed, simply take your dog out. Don't forget to clean up after your pooch and don't bring your furry loved one if they are sick, injured, or in heat. Before coming to any dog park, be sure to keep up with canine vaccinations and preventative meds. The risk is always there for spreading illness.

Went with the family and brought home a 2 month old male Pharoah bloodhound-terrier puppy named Fruitcake. The process was so easy and the gal that helped us was very tedious with the entire adoption from when I applied online--To the phone call and when we got to the site-- she remembered who I was and it was a great experience overall! My daughter is 😊 happy and so is the rest or the family. We adopted a healthy 2month old energetic 🐶 puppy whom is now a part of our ohana! Support our local humane society!!

Super nice staff! I took Alfalfa, out on a field trip, during my stay in Hilo. We had a good time! The facility, is clean, safe, not dreary, like some shelters. I melted, when I passed by the kitten condo! 😻

I helped one of the foster families with the kittens they were fostering while I was staying with them. I fell in love with two of the kittens, and they have helped me with every step of the process.

Probably our favorite humane society on the big island. There are always lots of animals including kittens and puppies that love to get attention. The staff are very helpful.

These guys are doing a tough job well. Always cheerful staff, open inviting. The animals are in clean kennels. You can just go in and walk there dogs and pretty the cats if you want. My kids really enjoy it...I do too, as long as we don't go home with another one.

Great service there for spay and neuter procedure on long waiting list. If you're lucky to get a call or text from it's veterinary clinic. By the way, there is safe distance protocols in the light of our continuing pandemic.

My experience is from a few years ago, but I'm still traumatized by it today. I rescued 2 young cats from the side of an empty road, shivering in the rain at night and took care of them for two weeks, using my own money for food/supplies. They were scared but in two weeks time became friendly, so that I felt they could be adopted since I couldn't keep them. I surrendered them to HIHS along w/$100 donation, trusting they would be taken care of, but not long after they told me they ran tests and were HIV or Felv + and would put to sleep asap. I said I would take them back or Rainbow Friends would take them but they refused to allow it. *Be aware--if you take them an animal, it might be put down.

I have been going here for years in kona and keaau. They will pick up clear in naalehu. I have gotten 2 older dogs in kona 20yrs ago and 2 older cats 10yrs ago i still have the cats. Their animals have everything you need to start a healthy pet family. I have always gone to animal shelters they are the best pets ever its as if they know their wanted when you get them. The employees are the best too

My personal experience since the changes to the name society, they don't accept pets. Especially kittens Because they don't have the space. I have tried other places like rainbow friends. They, too, don't have a spaces to take any. And everything has to be done over online through appointments.

I have volunteered at a few humane societies on the mainland, and now I volunteer in Keaau. I'll tell you this humane society has the most love for the animals than I have ever seen. They make sure every dog gets special attention every day, and they even play calming music after dinner which calms all the dogs down. They really do like it. They have a hard job with the over population of dogs and cats on the island, and they have so many dogs who have been there a while and feel like family. Be kind to all the employees and know they are doing thier best. And you can do your best by making sure you get your animals spayed and neutered.

The best! I have experienced working with the shelter multiple ways and they have been amazing! Adopting a pet from them was positive and they treated me with all of the kindness possible! They made an off island adoption non stressful and seem to always have the best interest of the animal in mind (even checking in once my new pup got off the flight). I highly recommend adopting from them.

We took a sweet girl named Chloe out for the day through the field trips for shelter dogs program and it was one of the highlights of our trip. What an amazing way to give some love and attention to an animal who needs it. The only bad part of the day was when we had to take her back. 100% recommend and will be looking for this program anywhere I go from now on!!!

I adopted my new dog Leia from this shelter 5/4/21. Leia was my 3rd shelter dog adoption, but first one from this shelter. The process was smooth and easy. I loved how you get to foster your potential new pet for up to 3 weeks before making the adoption official! I never felt pressured and didn’t have to pay for anything up front. They really emphasized the importance of making sure the pet is a good fit!

Individualized attention to me as the customer, giving the best Black Friday deal: two 6month old cats in addition to $100 of pet goods at 10% discount! 🤙🔥🐈🐈⬛ Keaau’s Hawaii island Human Society delivered above and beyond care to the animals too! It’s very obvious these people live to provide the service they do and they take pride in what they are offering to the island (animals, Aina and people)

Our experience with the Kea’au Humane Society and their entire human and pet ‘Ohana was exemplary!! They give so much love and attention to the animals they care for and it shows! We just adopted the sweetest girl today (Christmas Eve ‘22) and I am 100% convinced that her loving temperament is a direct reflection of the care this team shows!Thank you, thank you, thank you!! You made a six year old’s Christmas dream come true!Happy Holidays!!!!The De La Paz ‘Ohana

The staff cares about the right placement for their animals. They have a meet and greet where you can interact with the dog you are interested in. if that dog isn't a fit, they bring out other dogs that may work with you.The Keaau staff is professional and compassionate. I have adopted my dogs from here and will return when I have space for another.

I was rescued by a kitten here. Made the best friend I've ever had. Stinker Stacy, sweetest kitty in the whole world. Held me in one place long enough to fall in love, get married, and make a home. A little cat changed my life. Don't hesitate! Kitties need love, so do you. Go find one, and don't rule out the full grown sweethearts. There are GOOD kitties here.

We adopted 3 dogs from the Hawaii Island Humane Society. All 3 adoptions were positive experiences. They have the “Foster To Adopt” program which lets the dog be in your home up to 3 weeks before you make the decision to adopt. The staff is kind, caring and knowledgeable. Five Stars.
