Second visit to this Colorado State Park. Stayed in site 109 with a travel trailer. Internet reception poor to non-existence, we were only there for 1 night. Site was very clean. We will definitely stay there again.

Awesome place for camping and fishing. Choose between camping in a treeless campsite or a green-grass with electricity.Fishing is good here too. Lots of species to try and catch. Refer to the website for bait and those kind of info.Sunrise and sunset looks great from the dam.

This reservoir is pretty out of the way if coming from the denver metro area as it's about a 3 hour drive. We wanted to try it for the long holiday weekend since we have more time. Overall the reservoir is huge but it's not really been built up enough to handle recreation activities for people. Even fishing seems hard and many people also brought boats. We camped near Lake Hasty which is next to the reservoir but is very tiny with better access. Even with better access it's hard to get in to the water. We thought the campground would have access to the lake but instead you have to drive to the other side of where the campground is and get in, otherwise there's not any other way in due to the reeds surrounding the lake.Once in, it's beautiful and calming especially if going in the morning before the rush. There were a million blue dragon flies when we were there and maybe fish but I never saw any cresting the surface. I did see a few turtles and a couple of ducks. As for the campground, don't stay in 1-29, as there is virtually no shade on that side. The other side was covered in large shady trees.

This was my first stop in Colorado during my cross country van trip. I was super excited to be in Colorado again, I had never really been this east in the state before. The reservoir is absolutely beautiful. The spot we had was also super nice and they’re very simple and spacious. Only complaint was we seemed to be near some sort of waste bin that reeked of fish, but other than that it was a cool place!

Great overnight stop on my 7000 mile road trip. Spacious campsites in the Hasty campground, many amongst mature elms. Drive on the top of the dam for added fun and photo ops. Washers and dryers a plus also.

The views are wonderful, but don't let it fool you. The water is hard to Hook up and THE BLACK BUGS!EVERYWHERE! Thank God they don't bite. Apparently, we took in more than we thought because 7 months later, they are still coming out from where we don't know. They were all over the laundry bath house. It had looked like no cleaned in years. We will not be back...

Need to get the roads next to the lake taken care of before someone wreck their vehicle!Get more bass, like largemouth and smallmouth into the lake. Get the crappie back to what it was 30 years ago. Come on Wildlife folks Get your act together and get Colorado warm water lakes back to where it was when Bonney dam was around.Try to get information on how to grow big fish like the southern states!Restrooms: Good job of keeping them clean, can be better.Picnic area: RV area is very accommodating. Thanks.

Beautiful reservoir. This place is along the Santa Fe Trail. If you are exploring the trail, this is a nice place to stop for a hike around the area or even camp. If you choose to camp in the area, its a clean place but there are no trees or shade. The sun aint playing out there during the summer. If any storm system rolls through the vicinity, the camp sights around the reservoir get extremely windy. My tent barely withstood a gusty beat down. Another beautiful spot in Colorado though.

Great park to camp and get out on the water! We had great sun and weather after the storm passed a few weeks ago. Got our paddleboards out and got to fish from the bank. Very nice at the visitors center too. Helpful advice to put in at the ramp that is closed to boaters. Went on a hike on the trail on the last day that was neat lots of historical spots along it on the other side of the dam plus santa fe trail ran through there. Will be back next season!!

Stayed 2 nights, a Saturday and Sunday. Only about a quarter of the sites were occupied. Grounds were well kept and bathrooms were very clean. Laundry room was spotless and the machines were very reasonable. Host was very active and always passed by with a friendly wave and smile. Not much to do in the area but the park was a wide open to explore on bike or foot if you don't have a boat. Deer droppings were insane but they were illusive. There were lots of Prarie dogs near the other campground above the dam.

Nice park with views overlooking the great reservoir. Waterfowl is plentiful and in plain view. Interesting shoreline/geography. Lots of tent and camper sites. Visitor center had a mini-museum. Park rangers patrolled regularly. Great day trip/picnic; didn't fish or camp.

Spring camping in Colorado can be very difficult or very rewarding or both. We chose John Martin Reservoir State Park based on temperature and seeing a few memorial sites in the area. So, a little wind will not dampen our spirits and we will make best of it. At least the temperature is in the 70's...!

Gorgeous with lots of water for fishing boating amd even swimming. Considering all the water the swim beach is pretty small though. Lots ofcampsites, plenty of space between sites and empty sites gave us lots of space even on a busy holiday weekend. No shade at pointcampground, gonna need a canopy or umbrella for protection! Great time all around with bathrooms close by and a nice trail to walk!

This is a really great place to boat, fish, and camp. The reservoir was not busy, even for a weekend. There is dispersed camping at the South Shore if you don't need electricity or amenities. I caught 2 baby catfish on the Hasty side of the dam. I'm definitely going back next season.

Nice campgrounds lots of space between sites. Laundry ok, but showers and bathrooms need repairs. Falling apart and stinky. Park was full of moths everywhere. Beware! And you have to pay a $10 park fee daily on top of camping so really $37 a night. Would stay again.

We loved our campsite in the Point campground loop. Overlooking the lake, great sunrise and sunset views wirh a lot of space between most of the sites. Only vault toilets in the Point camp!Be cautious of weather: it can turn rapidly a huge storm suddenly changed course and we were literally deluged/hailed out!

Surprisingly beautiful and well maintained. This park is the furthest east out of the Colorado state parks. It's on the plains and just outside of Las Animas. There's a bit of a dip into the lake so just driving up to the park feels underwhelming. Once you're level with the lake is when the beauty really shows. Lots of water and a small river help grown the flora. The best part for me personally was getting to drive on top of the dam. The view was amazing and it was very well maintained. There's little shade here but swimming and boating are encouraged so you can at least keep cool in the water. Just pack some extra sunscreen.

Beautiful place. When we went this last time, we were able to view tons of pelicans. Went camping and boating several ago. Great for everyone!

Quiet. Big sites. We chose one without many trees so we'd have satellite TV signal. There is a more shaded section (See photos looking across at wooded section.). Fishing is available in Lake Hasty at the campground, or out in the reservoir. We had 20/30/50A electric at our site. Water hydrants are located in each camping section. An RV dump is nearby.

I only went out to camping grounds, then past there to the edge of the water. Its almost 1 car roads, as in its pretty thin to pass. The water and out doors nature is super energizing and just breathtaking.

Gorgeous sunsets here. Clean park with plenty of views for wildlife and overall beautiful scenery. Spacious campgrounds below the East side of the Dam with a lot of trees, and a trail I wish I had been more prepared for in the windy weekend we chose to visit.I would definitely stick to the roads and trails shown on the map from the visitors center, the roads that *seem* to allow access to the Northwest/Southwest side of the reservoir near Ft. Lyon are largely inaccessible and closed to private land.Plenty of bathrooms near the campgrounds and in the visitors center, bird and mammal taxidermy examples with collected insects and maps and other pamphlets for general information inside.Came to see the Snow Geese but instead found Blue Heron, Bald Eagle, Merganser and other ducks, Loggerhead Shrike, Meadowlark, a Roadrunner and a few Hawks. Ended up finding the enormous flock of Snow Geese by chance on the plains outside of Neegronda Reservoir close nearby which made the trip complete to see that phenomenon!Thank you Park Rangers Brendan and Erin for listening to and answering our excitable and overwhelming amount of questions!

John Martin reservoir state park is about a 2 1/2 hour drive from Colorado Springs Colorado. The reservoir is quite large but while we were there the water levels were really really low. It was so windy there while we were tent camping that it was very difficult to have a fire and our tent felt like it was going to blow away in the middle of the night. I definitely recommend not camping here unless you have A pop up camper or an RV.

Had a great time out here. Caught bass and walleye while fishing, and stayed at the Lake Hasty loop. Quite a bit warmer than Colorado Springs so I'd focus on this area early spring and late fall.
