Everyone in the reviews is saying it's expensive. Yes it is a little more. It's in Colfax. Are the same people complaining about the prices at Marvel but they still go there. It's a nice hardware store with friendly staff you can find just about anything you need there

Today @ Hills Flat Lumber, Grass Valley, was a visit with outstanding customer service! Danny Childs and Rylin went above and beyond to help me with weedeater issues. I sincerely appreciate their professionalism and knowledge; but as deeply, I appreciate their kindness & thoughtfulness in wanting to help me figure out the situation. A few new parts, yes, but above that was extraordinary helpfulness.I was truly impressed with their friendly willingness. Many thanks and a big recommendation for the rental department.

I like the home town feel, and the employees are usually actually quite helpful, unlike the "other" hardware store (Home Depot). But sometimes I'm blown away at some of their pricing. On occasion it's definitely proven to be worth the drive to Auburn to get the same thing for cheaper... Even with the added cost of gas is still worth it on occasion... But I try and stay "local" and shop here whenever I can. Other than prices, they are a much better store than the "other" guys...

I cannot say enough great things about this place. My company has an account here and Amber and the staff go above and beyond to help me get the right parts and fill my shopping list. Even when it's close to closing time, they spring into action with smiling helpful faces. They truly are the poster child of customer service!

There is a lumber yard, gardening sections outside. But it is a general building supply store with a moderate selection. The prices are very high, but unless you want to drive 15mi to Home Depot, you'll pay for the convenience. The help seems more interested in what you're doing than what you actually need from the store. But it's the only store in town providing building supplies.

I really wanted to support a local business, but while the employees are pretty friendly, they don’t seem to be very knowledgeable. I placed a special order metal sales order for a shed roof, but their rep wasn’t really familiar with the product. Based on the catalog I told her I needed 14 closure pieces, she told me I needed 20. So now I have 6 extra I can’t return because they’re special order. Also before I placed the order I was trying to get pricing on different options and she gave me wrong information (told me on of the larger panel options would cost more than the smaller individual panels). She also told me I didn’t need to order screws or tape because they stocked them. Turns out they don’t stock the correct screws. I bought the sealant tape there which was supposed to be 50’ per roll (per the label, website, and employee). Turns out it’s only 30’… so I’m short, come back to the store (a 40 min drive for me), and all they can do is make me buy more instead of giving me what I paid for. HD prices are already cheaper, but with this I paid nearly 2x as much.If you do a metal sales order, do your own research and don’t take the store employees advice. Or better yet, go elsewhere to avoid the frustration.

This is the go-to hardware store for people in the Colfax area who don't need enough to make the trek to Home Depot in Auburn worthwhile. The prices are generally significantly more expensive than Home Depot or Lowes; the biggest benefit of Hills Flat is the convenience for locals. The people there are really nice, and you can get power tools repaired and rent a variety of equipment.

Expensive. It's more of a convenience hardware store: if you don't want to run down the hill for better prices but are willing to pay for it. Wish we could afford to buy local here more often rather than at a corporate big box hardware but they don't make it easy. We'll stop in for small things occasionally though.

This lumber company was so we'll organized. Open spaces, great displays, and really competitive prices. The lot was beautiful, with everything well placed. Informative staff and their pickup, drive through area was wide even for a bigger truck pickup. Highly recommended.

Great store with everything, no help, nobody that works there knows anything about construction at all. Worst then Homedepo if you can believe it. Yard guys don't exist and when seen they get rude quick. I have lived in Colfax for over 13 years and have watched drugs take over that store. Very sad, still a great store if you know what your looking for and where it is on there shelves...super confident drug induced coma leadership.

Went into Hills flat lumber in Grass Valley.Jenn was running the front end by herself. She had 4 customers waiting and a delivery guy dropping off and picking up. She worked two registers to get customers handled faster and was very happy and cheerful the entire time. She was able to joke with and converse with all the customers. It was a very pleasant experience overall. Jenn was fantastic throughout the whole time I was there. She needs a raise/promotion/commendation or all of the above. I'm not big on bad ratings, but this was ridiculous: they'll cut plywood in half for you no problem, but for some reason they couldn't be bothered to cut a simple piece of foam sheet in half for my poor old mom. Not that they couldn't do it, they refused to. Why? They have everything they need there to do it. What happened to going above and beyond for your customers? A little extra effort to make someone's day a little bit better? Nah, they'd rather stick up their "superior" noses and make your day just a little bit worse.

I’m not one to write reviews, but I feel that I have too. Hills Flat Lumber has amazed me with their customer service and their attention to details. Dan Hinckley is the associate that I have been dealing with on a weekly basis, Dan has gone above and beyond to make my experience with Hills Flat second to none. The Management at Hills Flat has provide me with the security that my lumber will be the best it can be and delivered on time. With the lumber prices the way that they are, Hills Flat was very competitive and 100% of the time the best price I could find. Living in South Lake Tahoe we only have one lumber yard and they no it, so they up their price by 15 to 20 percent. Hills Flat has never surprised me with any unknowns. My project is 90% finished and I owe a lot to Hills Flat for making my experience stress free.Thank you to the Pardini Brothers and Dan Hinckley for doing such and amazing job, I’m a customer for life.Brad

I like going to this store, they seem to have a wide variety of things. Also, they delivered us our trim at a very reasonable cost. Helpful staff, particular shout out to Ken who always is ready to go out of his way.

The customer service is great. On my last project they were able to help supply me all the material I needed from Cedar shingles, insulation and dimensional number. Project was tree damage to a residence all taken care of thanks to hills flat lumber

Only place I will go. We went to 3 different hardware stores and home Depot looking for a specific part for our kitchen. Nobody had exactly what we needed. Swung by Hills Flat totally expecting the same story.Went in and walked right up to the part we needed. Customer is top notch . Very knowledgeable and friendly

Today was the last straw with this place. They will so not one more dime of my money. We bought a Stihl chainsaw and a weed eater less than 2 years ago. We were told to bring the chainsaw in and they would service and sharpen for free. Well he just took it in, and some kid, told him he has to pay for this free warranty service. Also wanted to keep the chainsaw for some undetermined amount of time. So done. I just don't understand how this place stays in business. They have nothing for the average consumer. No employees available ever, empty store and I've waited 20 minutes to get any help. I've had to load my own dirt and open the gate because employees never come when called to help. Now they want to get paid for a warranty service they offered. Drive to Auburn. Go anywhere but this place.
